Drat

Our family research trip to Wales has ended up costing us more than we paid for the holiday house - just! I think I mentioned how many pot holes (on A and B roads) we managed to not avoid. DB said he felt the car was vibrating as we drove home but as most roads are not very smooth, I wasn't sure.

Upshot is, he took it to the garage to be checked out:
One damaged rim. We need a whole new wheel and tyre and it will cost just over £300. Bummer!

  1. 'Drat' indeed, although I could think up stronger words.

The state of the roads at the moment is terrible. Really the government should put all road tax money into actually fixing the roads, rather than frittering it away on totally different things.

My son's car has just failed it's MOT due to both his rear suspension springs snapping, all due according to the garage to the large number of speed bumps where he lives, they said most of the failures the past few years are because of suspension and wheel issues.

    1. I think that is probably worse to live with and more expensive.

  2. The roads by us are full of potholes, some of them very deep and it is not always possible to avoid them. I sympathise on having to buy a new wheel.

    1. I'm glad to say it is the first time it has happened so that is a bonus!

    1. Luckily we had some saving tucked away that we could access easily.

  4. Not the sort of souvenir you want to bring home from a trip :o) Bloody pot holes and speed bumps have a lot to answer for...what happens to all that road fund tax we pay? - £500 a year just from our household!

    1. Well, I shall certainly feel safer once it is changed, keep waiting for it to deflate!

  5. Bummer, yes, but these thing happen and this would probably have happened anyway................just the cost of owning a car, still less expensive that a "new car"................pay it and move on :)

  6. The roads around here are terrible - we've had huge crater type ones on the adjoining side road which just seemed to appear overnight.

    1. It is one thing for them to be on small B roads but when they are on major A roads, I think that isn't on.

  7. I think everywhere the roads are bad.I wonder why we pay so much car tax, I thought it was towards road repairs but I suspect it just gets absorbed into government coffers.

  8. How rotten. I hope the horrendous bill hasn't overshadowed your whole trip. You feel there ought to be some way of claiming recompense, don't you? This sort of thing is so much more deserving than so much of the 'silly litigation' that goes on these days.

    1. No it hasn't overshadowed the holiday, just one of those things. We have probably been very lucky in that this is the first time it has happened.
