Another bit of garden changed...

I showed some pictures last year of the alpine bed that sits outside our kitchen windows. Many of the plants are a little more robust than I wanted so we took the decision to lift, divide and replant.

Previously it looked like this

Here it is newly re-planted
On the patio we had previously potted up a herb garden

It didn't do too well in the heat of the summer so the few herbs still alive have been put into the garden. After dividing the alpine bed we had a few plants left over, so along with some new ones and others dug up from down the drive, it too has a new look

  1. To be honest, Dc, I rather like your original planter! But I take your point. And yes, I find my herbs do best in the garden itself rather than pots - especially the chives for some reason do not 'do' in pots for me, but go like wild-fire in the gravelly bit under the window!

    1. I also loved the original herb planting but we lost most of the thymes, the parsley, chives and oregano. Chives and oregano grow in abundance in the garden though. The sage just kept drooping and all in all, by the end of summer it was a mess. Not sure if all the alpines will be happy but when in flower, they are lovely so shall give them a year or two.

  2. I planted up a huge pot this year with several herbs, Sage, Mint, Oregano, Parsley, Rosemary and Thyme and they've all gone absolutely mad. They've grown to a couple of feet high. I'm going to cut them right back, wash and dry them and freeze for when I don't have any left.

    1. I think the soil in this box dried out too much and any water I gave them, just ran out around the sides!

  3. I had planted some mint, oregano and sage into my garden. All has done rather well and I shall harvest more from them soon to dry for the winter. I`ll have to divide the sage plants very soon as they seem to do far too well and are spreading massively. I will pot a few little plants up to give as presents to friends and shall re-
plant the rest again out into my garden. I`m hoping to increase my herb garden by next spring.

    1. Mint comes through from next door so we always have that. Other herbs in the garden did well, but not all the ones in this box.

  4. We did have a very warm dry summer so maybe it was just a fluke they didnt do very well. Our garden isnt looking great because I am dismantling it (albeit slowly) . I am a fair weather gardener though so probably wont get around to doing much more this side of the new year.

  5. I am not so much a fair weather gardener as a dry weather one. We are at a standstill at the moment until Wednesday when our brown garden bin is emptied. There is only so much I can put in our bins, the rest goes off to the council compost heap!
