Nice while they lasted!

It was probably just under a year ago that I found the pattern to knit myself some slippers. I had thought they would last just through the winter time but no, they have finally worn out a couple of weeks ago, after several small patches of darning to keep the heels going.
As they are 100% pure wool, they are getting cut up into pieces and put onto the compost heap. First though, I have cut off the ankle bit which is still quite thick and obviously not trodden on. I shall save them both in case I need to patch the ones I am currently knitting.

Mind you, if I have enough spare wool, I might knit a large oblong, felt it, cut out two soles and attach them to the bottom of my new slippers using felting needles. Now there's an idea:)

  1. That takes me back, I can not remember the last time that I darned a sock but I still have my darning mushroom. My Mum used to unpick and re knit rather than darn.

  2. Couldn't darn these well as once made, they are washed in very hot water to felt them.

  3. just a thought but couldn't you cut out sole shapes from that stuff you get to stop things sliding about on trays etc and sew to the bottom of the next slippers you make. one it would make them last longer before darning and two stop you sliding on your bottom on slippery floors. I know I would be bustle over bonnet in a trice:)

  4. As odd as it sounds, they don't slip on floors as far as I know. Certainly don't on my kitchen floor and my son's fiancée has a pair and she has all wooden floors and hers don't slip either. The reason I wanted to use more knitted felt was that I might be able to attach them by using a felting needle. If not, they could be sewn on. Not sure yet, depends on how they feel once an extra bottom is on them.

  5. Stitching new soles on is a brilliant idea, they look so comfortable and warm.

  6. I think that attatching soles to your new pair of knitted slippers sounds like a good idea!
Looks like your old pair has been in good use :)

    1. Whether it will work or even if I'll be able to site the soles correctly, should be interesting!

  7. You have had your fair share of wear out of them havent you? Brilliant! I can go through two or three pairs of ordinary slippers in the same time.

  8. My mum always used the yarn doubled when knitting the toes and heels on my dads socks. They didn't wear out as fast.

    1. If these were knitted as socks that would be a very useful idea Janice. Unfortunately, they are knitted in the flat in the shape of a fat T, so you can't work out where the heels are.

  9. They've definitely lasted well! Can't believe the last year has passed so quickly- it doesn't seem long since you blogged about making them!

  10. I know and I could curse myself for not knitting them earlier . I reckon though, another week or so and they will be done. It is not so much I am a slow knitter (although I am), it is that my right thumb and two fingers on my left hand lose their feeling after 4 rows!!
