Remembering and finding out...

Welcome to my new followers halloween couple! Glad to have you aboard the old Norfolk Express.

Yesterday would have been B's 60th birthday and she had been so looking forward to celebrating it, yet knew she would not be able to.

Half of her ashes had been mixed with the remaining half of her husband's. Her parents and brothers had taken everyone over to Pembrokeshire to scatter them off their favourite cliff, then sat and remembered her on the seat she had paid for after her husband's death, and had erected at their favourite holiday haunt.

The other half of her ashes, still awaits placement in our churchyard, when other members of the family can get together to do so. Seems a long interval really, but there you go.

Anyhow, we all went down there to say hello to her husband, remember B and lay some flowers.

On a brighter note, on one of our last walks, I had finally tried a sausage sandwich (just don't go there, I normally don't eat them unless they are made by me). I was informed they had a high meat content and were made by Arthur Howell's - a well known, award winning butcher, whose web sites can be found here

Guess what, they were very nice, no gristle or chips of bone (both of which I had eaten in the past and that had put me off).

As we were walking this week, from Wells next the sea, in we went. A huge array of sausages were in there but I asked for the style sold in that particular cafe, turned out they were the Wells mix! A kg for £7.80 (yes expensive but well worth it) were bought and also on offer, half price, were large joints of chuck beef. I also bought one of those (weighing 4.5 lbs) for £10. 5 have been allocated for sausage rolls, the rest divided up for meals. The chuck joint was cut in half and they will be slow cooked when needed.

  1. Hi there,
How lovely you were able to remember B on her birthday, I am sure she was with you in spirit.
I know Arthur Howells very well from our time in Stifkey, shame we will not be returning in 2014. Which way did you wallk from Wells? I gather the weather has not been great recently, we are a little more sheltered on the middle of the south coast.

    1. Along the front, past the crab sheds, along the sea defence, then inland south, over some fields, up some hilly roads for 1.5 miles, down from said hills, back into wells to the Crown pub where we parked. More than that, can't say as I am not the map reader. Anyway, all in all, it was 5 miles. Everywhere was very foggy except Wells which was sunny!

    2. Yes I remember; we loved the walks around there, although as we were working we never got enough time off! Maybe a return visit with the van one day to re-discover the area. We did get to walk out towards Blakeney and saw the seals basking on the shore, I even went in swimming with them one day. It was a day I shall always remember, still can't believe that is possible in the UK.

  2. I am funny about eating sausages too. I remember bone chips and gristle of old! However the ones from our local butcher, tomato sausages, are superb! They are the only ones I enjoy X

  3. Can I just recommend Perfick Pork, another superb Norfolk butcher [ from Great Ryburgh]. Their sausages are splendid.

    1. Well, if we get that way again, I'll try and remember to go there.

  4. I remeber your walks with B. how sad that her parents scattered her ashes. It shouldn't be that way. I'm so glad you all got together. X

    1. No it shouldn't. We had coffee and biscuits at T's house afterwards.

  5. I like the idea of mixing ashes and scattering in a favourite place. B would have liked that.
As for the sausages I think it pays sometimes to buy better quality ones and yours sound as though they're just the job. Enjoy.

    1. A grand idea isn't it. We don't want to be in one place either with no-one to visit (nor would we want anyone to visit either). We'd both rather be moving around in the sea or something similar!

  6. I used to treat us to pork and black pudding sausages from my local farm shop. They were more expensive than my usual butcher( who was also very good) but worth it. Sausage sandwiches are one of the things I miss greatly!
I'm glad you were able to remember B on her birthday; it's so very sad that she didn't live to celebrate it.

    1. I've come to the conclusion that best quality and less quantity is probably the best route in meat related products. Same for Christmas, we don't over-indulge. Haven't spent all year losing weight just to plonk it all back on in 2 weeks!
