Your brain knows...

So why didn't I listen to it? I was peeling vegetables the other night and my hand slipped - phew close call - peeling that butter-nut squash!

Did I take the hint? No I didn't. I finished peeling it and started on the swede. Yep you guessed it, this time when the peeler slipped with just one more swipe to finish, I carried on. It slipped again and took a slice of my right index finger with it - clean off - couldn't even find it:(

It has been many years since I sliced a finger. The last time it was able to be stitched but this time there wasn't anything to stitch back together. Haven't done too much damage thank goodness but it hurts like hell!

The slice cut off was about the size of half of my thumbnail, but boy, did it bleed. The picture below is the cut during its second dressing as it had bled through a double dressing in 10 minutes or so! It has also slightly changed the shape of my finger tip!

Anyway, it was thoroughly cleaned again, another low adhesive double dressing applied, followed by a finger bandage - very difficult to do by yourself so DB had to hold it still whilst I twirled it into place!

It is now having a rest - ah -bless it:) I shall leave it alone for 24 hours and re-dress (unless of course it thinks otherwise) Mind you, what with a bandaged finger plus a connected heart monitor, it makes life interesting going about everyday things :)

24 hours later, it took nearly half an hour soaking in saline to get the stuck (low adhesive) pad off without causing further bleeding. The pain was another matter - had to really grit my teeth. 48 hours later it looked like this:
The extra little flaps of skin may well need to be trimmed off so it can heal better but I'll wait to do that for a little longer. Despite being a trained typist, it has taken forever to type this!

I have also updated and added Year 4 of our war diary - hope you enjoy reading it. Welcome to my new follower via Bloglovin - Julie Wagner - what a fantastic Christmas tree Julie!

  1. Ooh that looks so sore.
K slipped yesterday - on the stairs at work, and has fractured a bone in her foot. She carried on teaching for another 4 hours, but now has crutches and an appointment at the fracture clinic on Monday.

    1. So easily done isn't it? Does she need plaster?

    2. No plaster required apparently. She's bandaged toes to knee. J did exactly the same thing 3 weeks before we got married. He got his plaster off just in time and had managed to dispense with the walking stick but spent the day limping!

    1. I have tried to knit - v.v. slow. As you say, the dolly gets in the way although in a couple of days I hope to only have a half sized one.

  3. Ouch! Recently, when helping to peel potatoes for a Christmas meal for 60 and going as quickly as I could, I managed to "peel" right across 3 finger nails of the hand holding the potato, way down into the quick. I have learned my lesson and will be slow but sure next time! It is very difficult to do the normal things of life whilst keeping one hand dry and I appreciate your problems - and your pain! I do hope your finger mends really quickly.

  6. Gosh I bet that hurt. And those little flaps are SO annoying and yes, cutting off is probably the best thing you could do. oooooh I really really feel for you - it totally discombobulates you having your fingers clumsy and not functioning properly. Speedy recovery!

  7. I've done this before and agree it is very painful. I covered mine with a blister plaster for a few days and it healed up a treat and reduced the pain. Hope it gets better soon. Love reading your blog thank you

    1. Thanks and glad you enjoy reading. Finger bandage now only halfway down my finger. `messed up knitting my slipper yesterday but carried on regardless.

  8. That looks so painful, and doesn't it make life difficult when you can't use a finger? We keep a small bottle of essential oil of cyprus for small cuts and the like, a few drops on the wound really does stop the bleeding & is antiseptic too. Usually available in chemists, but look for "pure essential oil" not anything ready diluted in carrier oil, if you are interested in it, that is. Hope all heals up quickly, Vee x

  13. Ouch! I often slice off my nails when using the peeler as I go so fast to get the job out of the way lol.
I swear by Sudocreme for healing. As long as you can keep it dry, it shouldn't take too long to heal hopefully.

    1. I also catch my nails and have nicked myself several times, just not so badly before. Savlon and new dressing every day has worked well but don't know how long it will take to lose its sensitivity!
