Food Challenge Day 1 and stomach investigations!

Welcome to Suzanne via Bloglovin.

Yesterday was the first day on the food challenge and it went quite well. We had cheese on toast for lunch, then (a very small) roast chicken followed by bread and butter pudding with yoghurt and honey:

It was a tad boring having just one vegetable, especially as I have leeks in the garden, but needs must. I made 4 bread and butter puddings (4 slices bread, 2 eggs plus milk made up to 600ml, a little sugar and a few sultana's), in our mini pudding tins:
The 2 tins on the right had sage and onion stuffing in them. We served up 4 dinners and 4 puddings, the last two of which we shall have for tea Tuesday night.

The bones from the chicken were picked clean, which gave us a small handful of chicken towards soup, the bones were boiled and the stock kept. It is now being turned into a big saucepan full of chicken and vegetable soup for several lunches this week.

We got hungry around 9.00pm (after my normal cut off time of 8.00pm to help avoid feeling sick during the night) so had one slice of bread and jam which filled us up.

All our evening meals will appear on the menu tab above as per normal. As the oven has to be on tonight to roast some vegetables for tea, I shall take the opportunity to bake us a small cake of some kind as well.

Forgot to let you all know that all my stomach investigations gave me the all clear, both on investigative procedures and biopsies. I have neither GERD (link here) or ulcers, or stomach cancer (the early symptoms of which mimic GERD), or any inflammation at all, for which I am most grateful. The day time nausea has gone away and the night time one is less annoying, since stopping eating after 8pm and drinking after 9pm (3 hours before bed time as recommended).

    1. I know but my vegetables for the week are carrots, courgettes, peppers and mushrooms, not a lot of leeway!

  2. I'm so pleased that all your test results came back negative DC, I had been wondering how you'd got on and that's really good news. Mmm Bread and butter pudding sounds delicious and reminds me of the one my mum used to make back in the day. I can almost smell it from here. P x

    1. I think a little more than £20 would be better as we have nearly run out of vegetables. Have been invited out for a light lunch tomorrow so that will help.

  5. Hi, have you tried cutting out wheat products as it could be that you have a sensitivity to gluten?

    1. Thanks for that but my test was also negative. No signs of any inflammation in my stomach or colon or start of small intestine where several biopsies were taken. All negative.

  6. I'm glad all is well. Great start to the challenge. BB pud looks yummy. I think I would miss veg more than meat.

  7. Thank you. We are missing fruit and vegetables, would rather have all vegetarian meals!

  8. Dinner looks great, Dc, although it's a shame you couldn't have had some lovely home grown leeks too :( I'm so glad your tests are clear, it's such a worry when you don't feel well. I have had to stop eating after about 8pm too as I was getting heartburn at bedtime and feeling nauseous first thing in the morning. I only sip water after that time.

Going back to the challenge, I would really miss having my 5 a day as I used to have IBS which is now controlled by eating properly and I feel that it would soon kick in again with such a lack of veg. I will follow your daily plan with interest. Well done x

    1. It is a shame isn't it. I think in reality you would need yellow sticker food and home grown or up the amount to £25 minimum. £20 is in a sense, more restrictive than when we were on war rations!

  9. Hi, just reading comment on gluten. I also tested negative, but, then was told to try gluten free diet as
only intolerance shows as damaged intestine. A sensitivity doesn't show up but still exists.
In my case this proved to be the cause of my problems, which I might add were very like yours.
Its worth a try if only for a couple of weeks to see if it helps.
I hope you soon improve regards Jane

    1. Thank you for that Jane but I am pretty sure I don't have it, neither does the gastroenterologist. My nausea is very mild at night, not every night and no longer present during the day. I have no other symptoms of gluten intolerance. Mind you, that is not to say I won't check it out later on but not eating after 8pm seems to be working well.

    1. Me too! I will be using the leeks next week as they need using up.

  11. I'm glad the tests were clear, and that you seem to be getting the nausea under control with not eating late in the evenings. Those bread and butter puddings look lovely :-)

    1. Thank you. I think it is also positional. On my back is fine but on my side after a while it starts up!
