Trialling a different cream cheese...

I suppose under new legislation, I had better say before I start, that this is a product review, off my own back and no payment involved!

We normally buy Philadelphia Light cream cheese with garlic and herbs, but as we have been shopping lately at Aldi or Lidl, thought I would review one of their own brand, Goldesa cream cheese with herbs, which is about 1/2 the price of our normal brand.

I did buy it thinking it would have garlic in it, that will teach me to have my glasses on. Taste wise, it is not bad at all but we miss the garlic.

However, as we normally only add this to mushroom risotto, we don't mind the lack of garlic, as such, it got divided for use later on:
Overnight in the freezer then popped into a freezer bag for use another time:
It occurred to me that you could also do this with butter, then in the hot summer months when it tends to melt, you could simply take how many cubes you want for the next day and they will be ready to use.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

  1. I've not tried Lidl cream cheese as our nearest store is 9 miles away, but I do love Aldi's lighter cream cheese at just 49p for a 200g tub. I haven't tried the herb variety as that's full fat, but I add the plain lighter version to soups that require cream. I also love it spread on crispbreads or crackers and its great in a cream cheese, banana, raisin and honey sandwich made with wholemeal bread.

    1. We normally only use lighter cream cheese as well but Lidl only had this or lighter plain. Could have gotten that and added our own herbs and garlic if I had thought about it!

  2. Never thought of doing that with butter and cream cheese. I do it with wine and (whipped) cream but not butter or cheese so that you for that one.

    1. We also grate our Parmesan and store that in a double bag in the freezer, just removing what we need at the time, straight from the pack.

    1. You can do this with so many things, leftover wine for casseroles, cider, anything that will freeze.

  6. This is a perfect idea for us to try, we do buy cream cheese, usually Lidl, and more often than not it gets wasted...shame on me! It seems to be one of those things that gets pushed to the back of the fridge and forgotten about. I must try this next time. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Take what you need out in the morning and they will be thawed by lunch time.

  7. Never thought to add that to risotto, I bung in a lump of butter at the end and grate over hard cheese - unless it's fish - but this would do the job nicely. Not sure it would last long enough to reach the freezer mind you.....

    1. We use a weight watchers risotto recipe (so should be light but Lidl only had full fat) and it requires 2 of these cubes plus 25g Parmesan cheese, which is already stored grated in the freezer. I like a simple life!
