Good, bad and ...good!

Remember us picking some walnuts last year? Well, we managed to get 3 net bags worth eventually, 2 have been eaten but we are only just starting the 3rd. Some are no good but most are fine:
I don't know about you but a waste of manufacturing resources really gets my goat. Take talc containers for example. This is brand new and not yet open but look how much wastage of plastic container there is:
I weighed it just to make sure and it does weigh 500g but couldn't they make a smaller container. I notice it all the time and it drives me nuts!

We have just started to use our home made sweet chilli and tomato sauce - the chilli seems to have run away as it is not as hot as normal, but it is still good, none the less:

  1. I think that the manufacturers argue that [a] you need the airspace so that the talc shakes out as a fine powder and not in clumps[but I am not convinced by this! ]... and [b] when the bottles are filled in the factory, they need to leave space for the powder to settle - it takes up more volume as it is poured in because of the trapped air. [slightly more believable]
At least we can put the bottles in the recycling afterwards.

    1. Sounds like an excuse all round really but at least we can now recycle which we couldn't before!

  2. with the talc, at least it actually weighed what it should have, which is a bonus in my books, but yes I do agree a smaller container would be better.

    1. Excess plastic and packaging seems to be the in thing now, so annoying.

  3. Packing in general makes my blood boil. There is just too much of the plastic that no Council is prepared to get rid of so it goes into landfill. Crazy. The inventor of those coffee pods who doesn't use them himself because he has realised they will be around for at least a few thousand years after he has died. As my 'cooking from scratch' has grown my packaging has dwindled. Its many convenience food that is highly packaged. Rant over. Have a lovely day.

    1. We could hardly recycle anything until late last year when our council found where they could send it, now we can recycle almost everything which is something. But, less in the first place would be so much better.

  4. You are right DC.....waste has to be reduced at source as recycling takes energy....I seem to be a voice crying in the wilderness to get folk to be on board with that idea.....
Instead of talc use cornflour - just a good - fragrance free and you can use what s left over for cooking..
