DB at it again...

First of all, welcome to All Kins of Everything via here and Rebecca via Bloglovin.

I mentioned to DB the other day that my kitchen drawers are just too small depth wise (plus we only have 3) for storing much in them. I showed him an idea I had seen on the internet to create a holder for foil etc, using a metal magazine rack.

We measured the depth of the gap between the door and internal shelves and off we went looking for something to use. Unfortunately the gap was too small for any magazine holders we had and we didn't want to cut the back off the shelves to accommodate one or really buy unless we had too. The door looked like this to begin with:
Most of the DIY ideas come from the USA where they seem to have bigger cabinets and a wealth of unit internal storage items to buy, something which seems to be lacking in this country as far as I could see, especially for what we wanted to create.

Anyway, DB measured, went off to the garage and came back with a rough idea. We fiddled a bit with various aspects, sorted out what we needed and off he went again. Using a bit of old wood, hardboard, shelf supports and pine Fablon he created this:
Just the right depth to hold baking parchment, foil and cling film:
To hold everything up I also put my rolling pin in plus a bit of insulation pipe insulation to stop it all falling over (it can be removed when we find something else to put in it:
Problem solved and the drawer above this cupboard is now free to hold other things such as my tea towel vegetable and fruit bags.

Other things are in the pipe line!

  1. Good idea, I've never got anywhere to put my rolls of stuff.

  2. What a very good idea!
I keep all my long stuff on the top shelf of a base cupboard, but it's a pain (literally) having to bend all the time to get at them. I have a stainless steel wall mounted dispenser for foil, cling film and kitchen roll, but parchment, greaseproof, silicone liner etc is buried in the cupboard.
Unfortunately this wouldn't work in my cupboards as I store things in seagrass baskets which come right to the front of the cupboard, leaving no room for a 'roll storage facility'.
The baskets do, however, mean that I can drag them out to look for 'stuff' buried at the back of them!

    1. I did originally look at wall dispensers but all the ones I found restricted the size of one or the other of them.

  3. Great idea, Dc, I'm always on the lookout for space saving ideas - I have a pinterest page devoted to them! Slowly catching up on blogs as I've been "away" from Blogland for a while. Stuff happens, as you know!

  7. What an excellent idea. My husband is currently converting the central section of a wall of bookshelves in a dormer bedroom (i.e. it has sloping ceiling) to become a wardrobe with hanging space at the top (two cupboards side by side with some small shelves in between) and six drawers (two pairs of three drawers, side by side) underneath. Quite an undertaking but it will look good when finished and painted. Is there no end to our husband's talents?
