Watching my cholesterol

Welcome to Debi via Bloglovin.

Although my overall cholesterol is 5.7, which for me apparently is good, I would like to lower the LDL element of it.

We already eat oats plus oatbran for breakfast, 5 days a week. I shall also begin using oatbran for thickening soups, stews, curries etc.

Plant stenol based margarine is a new introduction for us. 2 teaspoons of this a day, where able to, seems to provide 1/2 to 1/3 of those a day. For now, we will not be using the little bottles of plant stenols that you can take once a day, as we want to gradually change over.
Also, they are very expensive!

The main GF bread we cook, also has 50% of oat flour as its base, which will also up the beta glucon element, again, helpful.

A new part for us will be to mix equal amounts of semi skimmed milk with skimmed milk. We absolutely hate skimmed milk and have no intention of using it on its own. However, if we can bear the mixture, especially in tea/coffee, then that will reduce the fat content of our milk by anothrt 1%.

If not, we will return to semi skimmed, which we have drunk for the past 27 years! Onwards and upwards.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

  1. Sainsburys and Tesco (and probably others as well) are two supermarkets that sell 1% milk of their own brand and therefore at the same price as their other milk. I can't tell the difference in a cuppa between semi and 1%. Very useful although I am now used to skimmed milk and find that semi now tastes a little too creamy in a cuppa.

    1. We can, probably because we like our tea very strong and dark!

  2. I too am supposed to be lowering my cholesterol. I'm using soy milk in my tea as soy is supposed to be very good. I've been drinking the little pots - they are expensive, but it seems that one a day with your evening meal provides exactly the right dose of plant stenols daily. I need to swap to porridge - I do so love my eggs in the morning. I've tried to cut out butter - I use soy spread or frylight. I'm supposed to have it re checked at the end of February - would like to avoid statins at all costs! Besides a prescription for statins would cost £8.70 or whatever it is these days, so I way that up against the plant stenols and it seems better! :)

    1. Prescription charges can be a good incentive. Mine has been at this level for quite a time.

  3. My sister-in-law eats porridge for breakfast, eats one to two apples a day and takes one omega3 vitamin a day. She has gone from 3.0 to 1.0 which may be a little low as they tell us not to get lower than 1.8. We are in Canada. I eat pretty much the same way and mine is fine.

    1. Maybe genetics has something to do with it? Anyway, we find the blend of milk okay so shall change over. Using up some old spread before changing over, so we shall see.

  4. I used to add a handful of oats to 1 lb of mince to make it stretch further when we had 3 hungry boys to feed! When things were really tight I'd add 2 handfuls but that made the mince rather gloupy.

    1. Oats can do that can't they, it can be a bit of a juggling act.
