Crochet

Welcome to M Mccarthy via Bloglovin.

At last, after starting one trial square pattern and giving up, and very nearly giving up with this one, I finally got the hang of it. I'm sure DB was very pleased as he was beginning to choke on the blue air:(

Our curtains are these particular colours and I tried to get their colours in my brain before buying some wool. I think I have managed to get them pretty well matched. Even if the curtains change eventually, these are some of my favourite colours, so any resulting make, should still be of use. The first picture shows the 4 colours I have chosen:
This one without the cream to show you the pink match:
Here is my first solid granny square:
The base of my thumbs were killing me halfway through so I shall definitely have to get me some special gloves to wear which should help. I have created myself a new blog header with my first four squares.

I think I might be able to do one every day, thumbs notwithstanding and also not flogging myself to death doing them, just when and as I feel like it. I'm thinking of a lap blanket for next winter so should have plenty of time hopefully, to complete one!

Herewith my first 4:
The purple one is slightly larger as I am beginning to relax (as much as I can) so my tension is slightly looser on that one. Overall though, I am pleased, even if I do still have to read up at the start of every one.

  2. Well done! As for the purple one being bigger, it might not just be a case of you relaxing more, it could be the yarn as well, even though it's all the same Stylecraft Special (my favourite budget yarn). I do a lot of crocheting and have found that different colours of the same brand yarn can have slightly different thicknesses, so some colours may work up bigger or smaller than others. It's generally not really that noticeable in a big project though, so I shouldn't worry too much if I were you. Good luck with your lap throw, I'm sure it will be fabulous and you'll have such a sense of achievement when it's done. Lovely colours, and they match your curtains perfectly.

  3. Well done and love your choice of colours. Keep at it - it is slow to start with but the more you do the faster you will become. There are some good tutorials on You Tube if you do get stuck. Your tension does not look bad at all. I write my pattern down on a shorthand pad and keep it with the work and usually end up memorising it, but its easier to keep the pad with the work rather than a big book. Keep up the good work it will look lovely.

    1. I did try writing it down but had to pull out several times. There is just one bit I keep doing wrong, hopefully I can nail it.

  4. The crotchet looks great, it gets a lot easier the more often you do it. I get arthritis in my fingers and use Addi Swing hooks. They have fat slightly twisted handles. They're not cheap and not everyone's cup of tea, but I love them and don't get a lot of pain when using them.

    1. I think some of the pain is due to the way Iold my wool but hopefully my hands might adapt. Interesting on the Addi swing hooks.

  6. Delicious colours and well done you for getting those squares done. I couldn't crochet if my life depended on it. As much as I love the finished result I don't have the patience to follow patterns either for knitting or crochet-x-

    1. Thank you. I could always put a line of crochet around the edges of my rag rugs but really wanted to learn the basics.

    1. I have to be the world's slowest knitter so hopefully this will be quicker.

  8. Wow, they look great!
Crochet 'grows' so much faster than knitting, it encourages you to keep trying!
The purple square being bigger is almost certainly down to the dye used in the yarn. I used to do a lot of machine knitting years ago, and quite often yarn which had a red tinge, red, pink, purple etc was always slightly thicker than any other! I could never find an explanation for this, Murphy's law perhaps?
Whatever other crochet project I have going, I do a 10cm granny square more or less every day, it's astonishing how quickly you get enough to make a lap rug or throw!
I keep all the small amounts of yarn I have left over, and as they're mainly 4ply, I have some lovely, randomly coloured blankets, throws etc.

    1. Thank you. The cream one I eventually finished today, after numerous unravelling, is the same overall size as the first cream one I did so maybe it is ainly the colour causing the difference.

  9. Well done! - I`ve just joined a crochet group on facebook and been to the library to get books out. I want to learn more different stitches as I`m no expert with crochet. Ideally, I`d like to be able to crochet some baby cardigans until November as I`m going to be a grandmother second time around.

    1. I might add a form of yellow as that is the colour at the center of the flowers.

  11. Your squares look really great!!! Good colour combination too and Stylecraft is a great yarn to work with isn't it. As for the slightly different size, truly don't worry about it - not that you were worried! - as when you join them it will all even itself out - well that is what I find anyway. Just wanted to reassure you! Fantastic work!!! xx

  12. Well done you! I have tried crochet a couple of times, but just don't have the patience for it - I hate having to pull things out and start again. The colours are lovely.
