Mothering Sunday Gifts

The greatest gift given to me is that of a child. I have always wanted to be a mother and though we only succeeded the once, he has more than exceeded our hopes and expectations:) Now I also have a daughter (DDiL), which I always hoped for, but wasn't able to achieve:(

When they were last here I was talking to said daughter about learning to crochet again, even something basic as a square that could be sewn into a lap blanket would do. She, like me, is left handed but was quite happy learning from a right handed booklet and was getting on famously. I mentioned that my brain isn't wired the same and I would have to copy the pictures and flip them to make them left-handed. Also, with arthritis starting at the base of my thumbs, I would have to have fatter than usual crochet hooks.

You can imagine my surprise and happiness, when I opened my gifts for yesterday:
A learn to crochet book for left handed people!
And some soft fat handled crochet hooks - yeh!

Thankyou both of you, just what I needed. Now I just need to give myself a good kick up the backside and get going:)

  1. I've got some crochet hooks like those - it's amazing how much easier they are to use.

  2. What a lovely thoughtful present, crocheted squares are brilliant for using up those oddments of wool and turning them into a warm and cosy throw for the winter evenings.

  3. What a lovely thoughtful gift. I've got those hooks, plus some others with wider handles....I was getting cramp in my fingers and hands all the time with the normal thin hooks. They are just so comfortable to use. I hope you have a lovely time re-learning to crochet, it gives me so much pleasure.

  4. What a lovely thoughful gift!
I can crochet, and very well too, which is amazing because I can't do anything else 'crafty'! So, get your backside in gear and get hooking, it's really easy!

  6. Thanks for all your comments though I am finding it very hard going, even going online hasn't fully helped! I can't for some reason, deal with the row after the foundation chains. 13 chains, 7 stitches, 13 chains, 11 stitches etc. After nearly an hour and progressing onto the second row, I am still losing stitches:( My right thumb is now aching like hell so hall try again tomorrow!

  7. You might find it helps to make your starting chain using a bigger sized hook than normal, that way the holes you're putting your foundation row into are a bit bigger, it makes life much easier!
It also means that your tension isn't quite so tight at the beginning of your work!

I have tried, and tried , with crochet but find it incredibly difficult - give me a pair of knitting needles any day!

    1. I am a very slow knitter but on the crochet front, don't think I will progress much more than squares, if I can get going!

  9. love your hooks. I have the same problem with my thumbs, will have a look around for some hooks. I just thought I would not be able to do the job. I taught my left handed sisters to knit and crochet by having them sit across from me. it worked.
