Crazy out there....

We did a normal food shop today and were back home by 09:10 thank goodness. Lidl and Morrison’s were both far busier than normal and it was a relief to get home!

Crazy shopping going on with food and booze positivily overflowing from supersized trollies. I can’t even begin to imagine how much will be wasted:(

It is the same at Easter. Honestly, anyone would think the shops are going to be shut for a month or more. It makes you realise just what life would be like and how ugly things would be, in a catastrophic event.

3 out of the 4 of us went out last night for our ex-school Christmas meal. When our square of roast pork came out, it was accompanied by a heaped tablespoon of mashed potato with 3 x 2”ends of carrot stuck into it. Imagine the millennium dome! T. had roast turkey and got everything with it, so maybe 3 times more than us.

We joked about what size the desserts would be. T got  2 x 1” scoops of ice cream, DB had a thin square of Christmas pudding plus brandy custard and mine was a 1 1/2” circle of white chocolate cheese cake, plus 2 quarters of a fig.

We did get mince pie and a hot drink but were overcharged on the bill by £11 so had to sort that out as well. Food was nice, service quite good, portion sizes need something changing.

  1. Absolutely manic in Asda today. I hate those big trollies piled high with food that looks as though it will be wasted .... surely everyone can't be feeding the five thousand!! We stuck to the little trolley we normally get and didn't even manage to fill that with what we needed.

Our one 'splurge' was in Pets at Home and was a new coat for Mavis, I was happy to buy it as it means she's a lot chubbier now than she used to be. The doggies will both be snug and cosy for their Christmas Day walk on the beach.

All the very best for Christmas and the New Year. xx

  2. We did our shop at 10pm last night in our local Sainsburys. It was almost empty which was perfect and the shelves weren't short of anything I needed. It's a massive branch as well so it seemed like we were the only ones there. Today however was a different kettle of fish in our local town.

  3. I am shopping for Christmas roast beef today, after having coffee at a friend's house, and hope the grocery store is not too busy. I am sure the weekend will be super busy at the stores. I adopted a dog a year ago and he has his first Christmas sweater; I posted a photo of him in it on my blog. Merry Christmas.

  4. We are visiting the Caribbean at the moment and fly back to Europe on the 26th so we are having curry for Christmas lunch. We have eaten out twice here in the last four weeks and I have put my foot down no more I will cook I will not pay all that money for inferior food. We are in a lucky position after years of frugal living that we have more money to spend we just cannot throw it away. We still take a picnic four lunch when we go out.

  5. The week before Christmas, shoppers seem to lose their minds and it is a free for all. Other then Harvey sending me on a hunt for a cell phone for Christmas (my gift) I am so glad I do not have to enter any other stores until after the holiday.

    God bless.

    1. Amongst our friends, we set a small limit for a present or agree to make something useful.

  6. I’m sorry but how do you know the food will be wasted? I have a large family who will all be arriving over Christmas. I buy organic everything it’s expensive but far better for health and the environment than buying mass produced meat and veg because it’s cheap. Also I cook everything from scratch bread sweet desserts cake biscuits etc much nicer and healthier however my trolley was overflowing so many of you would see me and make huge assumptions about my lifestyle and level of debt etc. I am retired I spend wisely I buy the best I can afford and am certainly not wasteful so to make assumptions and judgments about people from the size of their shopping trolleys is at best misguided.

    1. Research, see here for just one of many stories: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/jan/10/uk-throwing-away-13bn-of-food-each-year-latest-figures-show

Also, we shop in the same store, on the same day, at the same time, seeing the same people all year and what goes in their trollies normally. I think not everyone can have a huge family to cater for! Also, a walk around where I live, where we see overflowing food waste containers after such festivities.
