Memory

Someone was discussing long life milk and I immediately thought of my Nana B. She only had milk in the form of Clover. It came in a glass bottle with a red metal cap, delivered every morning via the milkman. It was a full cream uht milk and I didn’t like it at all.

I didn’t see much of either of my nana’s when I was growing up, but out of the two, she was my favourite. She had thin, flowing white hair with a very visible pink head. Her face was smooth in the centre but very wrinkly around the edge and she had lots of laughter lines around her blue eyes.

She was neither too large nor too slim, wide hips, but her boobs lived at her waist which I found fascinating as a child.

She had had a very hard life. My granddad, who died years before I was born, was by all accounts, not a nice man.

She died when I was 17 and I wish I had seen more of her but life just got in the way.

  1. The thing I remember most about one of my Gran was that she used to slip me 2/6d as I went out of the door. My Grandad was a bit mean and she had to do it on the side, that bought me a lot of sweets in those days.

  3. I have some lovely memories of my sweet Nan on my Mothers side. Sadly the other Grandparents died when I was very young. I am a great fan of UHT perfect for this time of year with cancelled ferries an issue at times.

  4. I used to go to my nana's every Saturday morning, I was age 10-14yrs., and do her grocery shopping for her-2oz. Cheshire cheese, 1oz. mushrooms, 2 slices roady bacon, a loaf of unsliced bread, 20z. butter and not much else. I would also cream stone her 2 front steps, help her with her washing-it was my job to turn the mangle after it came out of the big boiler and peg it all out on the line. I was #2 out of 5 kids. She gave me 'spends' every week to bring home for everyone. Oldest got 6d, I got 5d, next got 4d, next 3d and the youngest, who was only 1 year old got nothing. I didn't get anything extra for doing all the stuff for her, that was an expectation as the oldest girl!! This was in the early to mid 60s. She was a very 'with it' nana though. She watched Top of the Pops every week and then we talked about it when I went over, she new all the pop stars but her number one favourite song was Mack the Knife, can't remember who sang it. She also had a hard life as my grandfather died when I was 2 and she didn't have much pension so she always tried to make a penny do the work of 2. Sorry for the long ramble but your post brought back some memories for me. I have never seen long life milk here. We buy our milk in gallon jugs so we're good for about a week but it would be nice to have some long life milk on the shelf for when we have had a huge dump of snow and don't want to go out.

  5. I only knew one nan and neither granddad. My nan often stayed with us and shared my bed but she wasn't much fun. She slept a lot and complained about her gums and her bunions. She must have only been in her early 60's then which is younger than I am now. She seemed very old.

    1. Yes they did seem old. Wouldn’t have fancied sharing a bed.

  6. Memories are wonderful things. I remember thinking my Grandma (only had one as the other died when my Mom was young) was as wide as she was tall and baked the best treats when we would come to visit.

    God bless.

    1. Obviously a good cook who enjoyed her own treats - maybe?
