Brrr ...

We have just completed a job we both don't enjoy doing. The outdoor and indoor freezer check has been completed (not normally a problem) but the outdoor upright freezer needed thawing and DB has just done that and cleaned out the freezer outdoors.

Every time, we begin with gloves to try and protect our hands, each time we discard them. Guess there are some things you just don't remember as jobs like this are infrequent!

As autumn is already here and winter will soon be coming, we like to begin batch cooking. By jigging around the drawers, we have managed to get ourselves just about one of them empty.

Go on, I know you want to know - herewith said list. It became blurred when I shrank it so sorry about that.

  1. Defrosting my freezer is on my to-do list today! I have whittled the supplies down and so we only have a portion of cottage pie left in there, so perfect timing before restocking over the season.

  2. I just know those 7 chicken breasts will get turned into something else. As we have eaten less and less meat, just one breast is enough between us so if I thaw 2, who knows!

  3. You are very organised. I used to wait until the snow was on the ground so that I could empty it, defrost, clean and put it all back still frozen. X

    1. We put everything into the bath, cover it with an old duvet, or towels, blankets etc. It keeps cold and still frozen for at least an hour or two.

  4. Not my favourite job but it has to be done. I always cook from scratch and normally manage to freeze a container for another meal for us both. Sometimes though one might 'get lost' in the freezer when it's been forgotten and a nice surprise when it comes to light again. I'm talking a few weeks as opposed to months. Never too sure how long a cooked dish would stay edible so err on the side of safety and discard if unsure.

    1. Most meals are eaten within a few months but fruit can be longer and still seems edible, no matter what freezer books tell you. I only throw away things with excessive freezer burn and that doesn't happen often.

  5. I did my last freezer audit with every intention of keeping on top of things by crossing things off the list as they were used. Although my intentions were good I didn't manage it for as long as I'd hoped. I know that at the moment I have lots of apples, French beans, courgette soup, tomato soup, tomato sauce and sweetcorn in there along with a few homemade ready meals, but anything else is a mystery!

    1. I think our two freezers together are probably smaller than one large chest freezer and both upright so that helps with the inventory. We manage 90% of the time to keep it up to date but do a new inventory every month.

  6. This is a regular autumn job for us too, but we had a storm a couple of weeks ago which left us without electricity for 4 days! Just 24 hours too long for the freezer so we moved it all to the fridge and cooked all the raw meat the next day. The fruit and vegetables we put back in the freezer - they had softened but will be Ok to eat. The cooked dishes and the ice cream we threw away. Our freezer list is very short.

    1. Now why couldn't that have happened in deep winter then the cold/snow would have kept everything fresh!

  7. A great idea to keep such an inventory. We dont have a big freezer so cant prepare meals much in advance, nor freeze much. I think it would be ideal if we did and a good way to budget for food.Unfortunately no electric in garage outside nor space for another freezer inside, but definitely something to consider if we do move in the future.

    1. Our garage had one socket which was extended with its own fuse box when we moved in. Not really just for a freezer but for other gadgets, pond pump etc.
