Demise of my jumper...

I freely admit to not being a very good knitter, especially with complicated patterns. Only being able to do 2 long lines of knitting at a time before my thumb gives outs just compounds the situation.
It has taken me literally months to get to this stage:

Can you see the most obvious problem?

That's right, the pattern is on the back rather than the front. It has been adapted from a WWII very complicated pattern which I just could not do. I decided in the end just to do a 12 stitch double moss pattern on what I thought was the front!!!

On top of that, it is too wide at the top and too short. I knew it would be a bit short as it is meant to finish at the waist but it is at least 2" too short. You would not believe how much cursing went on just to pick up the stitches for the neck so I had already decided to crochet the arm-holes!

Anyhow, it is uncomfortable to wear and just plain wrong but not to be out done by my own stupidity, it will get turned into a cushion cover or some such thing - some day...

At least it only cost just under £5 to make as the acrylic "wool" was on special offer. Think I'll stick to dish-clothes now or learn to crochet basic squares. I remember my sister making some sort of over jumper with crochet squares - I think.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

  1. That must be SO frustrating- that central panel is beautifully knitted- and so is your bottom rib. you have various options - [1] bag it and donate to charity shop immediately [2] Leave it in a drawer till you can face re-knitting it 'correctly' [3] turn it into a cushion cover [4] unpick it NOW and roll up the balls of wool ready for when inspiration strikes again. I think I'd go with 1 or 4. Just don't let it linger, making you feel unnecessarily guilty. We all have disasters like this - and it's not as if you spent a fortune on the yarn. Have a glorious and joyful Easter!! xx

    1. Cushion cover as the colour will fit in nicely with the lounge.

  2. Thank you so much for providing my first giggle of the day!
I'm sorry to have laughed at your misfortune, but it reminded me so much of myself!
I can't knit to save my life, but in my teens did a lot of crocheting, so took up my hooks again a few months ago, thinking it would all just come straight back to me...ha....as if!
I still remember how to do all the stitches, but my tension has gone all to glory, perhaps because my fingers aren't as dextrous as they once were.
I made myself a simple winter hat, or that was the intention, I have a stupidly small head and made allowances for that, but still ended up with something that I could have made handles for and used as a shopping bag!!!
Definitely try crochet though, it's so much simpler than knitting, and it grows much faster too, great for an impatient creature such as me!
Your unfortunate jumper however, will make a lovely cushion cover!

  4. I'm the same. I've hidden the cardigan I'm knitting because I've lost track on the decreasing. I must choose patterns where the arms are square. I'm going to unpick mine when I find an alternative pattern.

    1. Haven't got the patience or inclination to unpick, it will definitely be a cushion cover.

  5. Well at least you had a go!!

I never progressed past squares and scarves with knitting or crocheting so I think you made a valiant effort and it is a glorious colour for a cushion cover anyway :-)

  6. Bummer.......I knit every day, have done since I was six....can t tell you how many disasters I have produced. If all else fails lay it flat between your mattress and you bed base as extra insulation......really works; newspaper is good too.

  7. Oh no! After all the effort you put in. I'm about to embark on a cable jumper for J. I'm starting well in advance of when he will need it so that I can pick it up when I feel like it. I reckon he deserves a new one as the last one I knitted for him is at least 23 years old!

    1. So I noticed, left a long message then realised I wasn't signed in! Looks good though, it would take a year or more for me to do that.

  8. I've only ever completed one sweater(jumper to you) in my life - neither arms match and the neck is a bit small, but I do wear it. I call it Frankensweater. Beats going cold. LOL I actually love that pattern on the back of yours. And the color.

    1. The pattern I made up. It was 12 stitches wide in double moss stitch. I hope the pattern will become the front of the cushion.

  9. I would have given up long before it got to that stage, you did well. Nice colour. Would it fit a smaller person. It doesn't matter that the pattern is on the back.
