Blooming Sparrows

On opening the bedroom curtains, about 5 sparrows flew off from the small raised bed. Little beggars, they had fully chewed several baby spinach seedlings and damaged a few more. I scared them away and promptly went out to put in stakes, cotton thread and foil:
I hope that will keep them at bay as they were also just starting to nibble the baby beetroot as well!

I harvested the biggest of our gooseberries yesterday. It is not something I usually do, normally harvesting them all at the same time which seems a bit silly. Anyway, they weighed 1lb 12oz:

A nice start to the picking season. We had them with custard. I shall pick some more soon, hopefully they will be as big and juicy as these were.

  1. The sparrows had a row of my newly sown beetroot last month. I now grow beetroot under fleece. I have about another fifty plants to go out once the I've harvested thirty plants at the weekend. I looking into a sonic bird scarer for next year!

    1. It always seems to be the sparrows. Normally they take the tops off our peas unless they are netted.

  2. We have a small veg patch in our garden. The sparrows and other garden birds have had almost everything in it!! Lettuce and strawberries are in tatters. However they've left the carrots, beetroot, courgettes and runner beans alone - how thoughtful of them!!

    1. Very annoying isn't it. This small bed 4 is the only one without a high net protection which DB will be sorting out ready for next year!
