Weekly loaf and extra cheesy scones...
Having been away last weekend, my early week baking went out the window. We managed until Saturday when bread was needed!
This week, it was strong flour, spelt and some GF brown teff:
On the cheese scone front, I have normally used what has been requested in the recipe, in this case Plain (All Purpose) flour. However, when I had run out of this before, I used strong bread flour and they were so much better. So that is what I have stuck with. I also add a good pinch of mustard powder to help bring out the cheese taste, as well as putting a slice of cheese on the top of each scone before baking:
The kitchen smelt heavenly.

Those look lovely. How much does it end up costing to make them?
ReplyDeleteDepends on the cost of your ingredients. I haven’t priced them for ages but we like to know exactly what goes into them and how good they taste compared to shop bought.
DeleteI have a little bit of flour left I may make savoury scones to freeze they are always handy. Would love to start making bread on a regular basis but I fear I would eat far too much of it.
ReplyDeleteWe get 16 slices from it, bag one lot of 8 for use over 2 or 3 days and freeze the other 8 for the weekend. It can take us up to 9 days to eat a loaf.
DeleteThe scones look wonderful. I like the idea of using strong flour and putting a slice of cheese on top is brilliant.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I've done this year is make mince pies but instead of cooking them I've frozen them raw, in their tins to cook when needed. They don't need defrosting; just add 5 minutes to the cooking time.
So far this has been a great success but only if you have enough tins and freezer space!
In our household it stops them being eaten too quickly! Sue
Good idea. Wonder if once frozen you could remove them from the tins, store in a box, then back into tins for cooking?
DeleteI don't see why not. That had crossed my mind as the tins are rather bulky but I cooked the frozen ones before I got desperate for the fridge space or for the tins!
DeleteIf you try it please let me know and I will comment if I try to box them.
It's just crossed my mind that a box of frozen mince pies might make a good present with or without a tin. Sue.
Haven’t made any yet so probably won’t try it this year.
DeleteIt all looks delicious. Haven't made cheese scones for ages so must do some soon.
ReplyDeleteWe love them but try not to make them too often.
DeleteYum! I can't remember the last time I had a cheese scone, so I may have to make some very soon.
ReplyDeleteWe prefer savoury to sweet, cheese being our favourite.
DeleteThose cheese scones look great. I bet they were a big hit, I love cheese.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
We had some more with cheese and pickles and some with soup.
