A Smart Meter

for our electricity has been fitted as part of the roll out of the devices by our provider. The man was here for about an hour, and was a little concerned about the lack of phone signal as we are in a dip. They apparently use EE but here in the dip, only Vodaphone works really well, followed by O2.

However after being switched off for about 15 minutes to connect wires, he tested it and it seemed to work. At the end of the day, we are used to sending in our readings to them, so if we have to resort to that, its no big deal.

The first few days, we kept checking it to see how much each appliance uses. We had already worked out that the cooker, microwave, washing machine and tumble dryer would take the most, and were correct. However, the tumble dryer only gets used once a week to half dry the towels (keeping them soft), then they go out on the line or on a clothes airer inside to finish off.

All the above mentioned appliances use alot to begin with but after that, switch on and off constantly, which helps lower the cost.

  1. Interesting to read this because my meter needs replacing and, as always with something now, I worry!
Does it really make any different to have a smart meter, given that I don't have an iPhone of any kind?

    1. You don’t need a phone, it uses the mobile phone tower to send info to them. All houses should have them fitted by 2020, free of charge.

  2. Electric showers positively guzzle through power - and yes, the microwave too. Kettles do but only for a short time of course, and our very modern dishwasher & fridge/freezer hardly seem to use anything at all! we don't have a smart meter but we have a clip on monitor on our cables so I'm used to seeing what the different things use as they click into life or off again. Best bargain in our house is our dehumidifier which I reckon uses around 25p per day if it's running 24 hours!

  3. We had a man come to fit a smart meter last year - but he could not get a signal, so went away again. He is due to come again next week... I live in hope!

  4. We will be getting smart meters here after a bit more testing. There was a bit of a problem with the first test.

    God bless.

  5. I love my meters, you can see everything at a glance. The only thing I don't like is it makes changing supplier more complicated as the meters are set up for individual companies a problem they are working on presently.
