Inane comments

We were returning from our walk up the woods. Ruby was back on the lead as we were getting close to the road. We were walking along the field edge to keep away from some owners whose dogs don’t like an exuberant puppy jumping up to greet them.

Coming up the track, was an older couple walking their dog off lead. As we drew level we said “Good morning”

Their slightly raised eyebrow reply “Don’t you all allow your dog off lead. Ours has never been on a lead in his life”

It was all I could do to not say “Good for you!”

  1. How ridiculous of them! We are like you, we let Betty off lead in the fields or on the beach, but put her back on lead when we're nearing the road or exits, or if we see over-exuberant other dogs not on leads, or nervous looking people or children about. Dogs are dogs and behave like dogs, however well trained they are, there might always be situations where their instincts take over and they're not so responsive to human verbal calls.

    1. Very true and that is why she is more often than not, on a lead.

  2. Very irresponsibly of them and stupid too. Some people shouldn't be allowed to have dogs.

    1. We are almost surrounded by roads so Ruby has most walks on lead to be safe.

  3. Hi there, people are always so quick to judge aren't they?. I have a dog, and although he is fairly well trained, I would never let him wander about near a road or near people to jump up (although I have to admit he has done if I am not quick enough). You are very responsible dog owners, as you have the best interests in mind for ruby...she is a beauty.
Love reading your blog sue x

    1. Thanks and thanks. We want her to be as trained as possible. She has now moved up to the intermediate classes, a lot more brain work for us all!

  4. What did they want? A medal? Stupid people. You definitely have the right idea when it comes to controlling your dog.

    1. Thanks. Despite her still being in training, she doesn't always return first time if other dogs or people are near.Really don't want to take the chance as one or two dogs have being rather aggressive with her.

  5. You are doing the right thing. Even the best behaved dogs can be unpredictable.

    1. Very true. Being a puppy she can be very unpredictable.

  6. Believe me, I appreciate the fact that you keep your dog on a leash - especially around others. The law here is that all dogs are to be leashed unless in a designated off-leash area (now it's a bit different for you being more in the country) but I am shocked at the number of people who completely disregard the law, putting their dogs and people in danger. It doesn't even take a dog being vicious - a large dog just having fun can knock over or frighten a child or elderly person. Thank you for being more thoughtful.

    1. She has to be on a lead during our training sessions. Always whilst pavement walking. Usually only allowed off if no-one else around. The vet knelt down to say hello and got knocked over and Ruby is still quite small!

  7. Keeping a dog on the leash as we call a lead here in Canada is preferable to allowing a dog off and perhaps causing damage to property, injury to other dogs, or injury to your dog. You are the bright one for doing as you are doing.

    God bless.

  8. That couple was putting their dog, your puppy and others at risk. Lead laws exist for a reason. Public and animal safety.

    1. No way would she be allowed off lead on the pavements. I think perhaps they drive everywhere and just let their dog off.
