If you had to choose between instant mashed potato (rehydrated) or a tin, what would you prefer?
We have tried tinned potatoes, and even roasted, neither of us was keen. Instant potato, for us, has a lot better taste and we always have a container of it, just in case. It is also used in the ingredients to make our potato bread.
For mash, I weigh the dried flakes out, measure the liquid (using milk and water), a blob of butter, salt and pepper. Once mixed, it’s texture is great. Taste wise, with cheese, gravy or sauce, it is quite good.
Left to go cold, it can be used in fish cakes, fried in a hash and probably a myriad of other things I haven’t yet tried.
I sometimes use it as a thickener in soup/ have made potato cakes with it/use it in the moho to accompany casserole etc. Don’t use it ofter but we find tin potatoes quite horrible no matter how I try to improve them.
ReplyDeleteI agree about the tinned potatoes.
DeleteI have never tried instant potato but maybe its something that I should have in the the store cupboard as a standby. Neither of us are keen on tinned potatoes but we can tolerate some frozen products such as croquettes.
ReplyDeleteWe only use the well known brand, made up with quantity of flakes to liquid as stated otherwise it goes soggy or too dry. Extras added afterwards to improve the taste.
DeleteSliced canned potatoes work in hash. Drain, brown with the onions and mix in the canned corned beef.
ReplyDeleteI just find the taste of the tinned ones, very strange.
DeleteI quite like both!! Although I do add a lot of butter to the instant stuff. For tinned potatoes I slice or dice them and fry them. Then sprinkle them with salt. Neither are as good as fresh but good to keep as a standby
ReplyDeletePerhaps frying them is the way to go.
DeleteI'm all for anything that gives me a quick dinner. We've had ready meals all this week and it's been lovely not having to mess about making a meal. I know, I'm lazy but I've had my fill now at 72, lol

I have quite a few home cooked ready meals in the freezer so we are eating those to make room!
DeleteI have never used either so have no way of knowing which one I would prefer. I think you would use the dried instant type a bit more though.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
It’s certainly an education trying them:)
DeleteI think I would have to sit on the fence and say both too for similar reasons to Ali.

Nowt wrong with the fence.
DeleteI...don't mind? the tinned ones cut up in a strong flavoured sauce like a curry. Handy when camping. Although someone told me that deep frying them makes them taste just like the home fries in Franky and Bennies restaurants. So I bought a tin to test it. The tin has been looking at me reproachfully from the cupboard for about a month now.
ReplyDeleteHaven’t tried them in Frankie and Bennies.
DeleteHello from Canada!
ReplyDeleteI am wondering, are fresh potatoes never an option where you live then? I grow a garden in summertime, but taters keep well for us year round in the coldroom.
Fresh potatoes always here but I was referring to an emergency. A sack of potatoes used to be £4.50, now they are double that. For two of us, a sack would take forever to eat, our garden isn’t large enough for growing and then storing somewhere, no cold rooms here either.
