A change in how Coronavirus deaths are calculated

Currently, only people who have died in hospital of Covid19 have been recorded in our daily figures. Now, once a week, the Office for National Statistics will also add in those who have died from the virus in the wider community. These deaths have to have been recorded by a medical professional to count in the figures, so expect to see a rise.

  1. Most of those who die here are in the hospital (well I think all who die are). There are a couple of senior homes where there have been deaths as well.

    Ours are added daily.

    God bless.

    1. Same here but now, the non hospital deaths will be added once a week I believe.

  2. Perhaps it will be balanced by a drop as many more people are isolating/distancing. I wish there was a way of telling how many don't die. At the moment it's very one sided.

    1. World wide Joy, recovery of those affected is currently 81% if that helps.

  3. I was shocked to hear that the figures didn't include those that have died in nursing homes worldwide, this will indeed make the figure a much more sobering one. Seeing the bodies being brought out of an Italian nursing home and being told that their deaths were not included in the national figure was a sobering thought.

I do think they need to make more of the good recovery rate, as you say above it is 81% and is a pretty good figure. But thinking again in order to keep some of society obeying the isolation rules maybe it's right that this is withheld … unless you take the time to look for it.

    1. The figure should reflect anyone who has died of it, outside hospital. Both in care homes and in their own homes etc, once verified.

  4. I always count my blessings that 80% of cases are classed as "mild" and do make good recoveries.

    1. At least it was ‘only’ an extra 40, could have been a lot higher:( Still very sad though.

  5. I think more clarity is needed. The figures should be split further. How many died of the virus, and how many died with it.
