Shopping

I can’t seem to get my shopping to more than a week but less than two weeks, it’s driving me mad as I really hate shopping at the best of times.

I think the problem is we like a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables and our fridge, reasonable size that it is, can’t hold enough. Also, we can only freeze so much milk and we use quite a bit. I am trying to do my bit for the farmers who are currently binning thousands of litres of it daily with all the cafes, canteens and restaurants being closed:(

There are so many things being affected by this pandemic that we normally never think about.

Shopping today, no plain or bread flour, no baking powder, no desiccated coconut (for baking with), very little pasta, no hand sanitiser but toilet paper! Most tinned goods were okay but on quite a few items, limited choice. I was glad to get outside and remove my mask as a chap was coughing a lot and barely covering his mouth. Yet again, one or two hovering within one metre. Just one other person had a mask and gloves on.

Once home, things cleaned and put away. All door handles washed with soap and water.

There is an interesting article on the world Coronavirus daily cases website about what they know so far about how it is spread, see here.

I think I need to update my cleaning processes!

  1. Although people were obeying the 2m distancing in the queue at my local supermarket, it was an entirely different story once inside - despite one way aisles and floor markings. It's one person/trolley per household at this particular one. I saw a couple with a trolley each clearly shopping together and faffing about, chatting and deciding which products to buy. I just wanted to get out asap!

    1. My daughter and I have a trolley each. She's shopping for us, I'm shopping for my mother. It's impossible for one of us to do it all, trying to follow 2 different lists at the same time. We occasionally chat in the store, and I ask her to get things that aren't on her list, or I pick things up if I see them and put them into the trolley that she's pushing. Some people probably think we're breaking the rules.

    2. Certainly would be. Now I am by myself I find it takes longer as I keep forgetting my glasses!

  2. I don't like shopping at the best of times, but now it's so scary ... and such a relief when you are back in the car and headed for home!

I definitely need to update my cleaning processes, but I'm not worrying too much, there's only us two and the animals.

    1. We do what we can, when we can and overall try our best. DB stays in the car due to his age, but likes to come to get out!

  3. I'm just in from shopping and I won't be doing it again for at least 3 weeks - more if I can manage it - don't care what I'm craving!

My supermarket is very organized, only let's so many in at a time and enforces all the rules. People inside were being very respectful about trying to always maintain their distance, waiting their turn to get something off a shelf if others were there first. No wipes or bleach, no bread flour or yeast and no frozen fruit and limited choice for the frozen veg - so guess that was the truck that hasn't arrived as yet. Lots of fresh fruit & veg and dairy - and a smaller amount of meat than usual but I got what I wanted so not an issue.

I'm just having a rest - walked home with an absolutely packed bundle buggy and it's a brisk 20 minute walk so at least I got my exercise. Dropped all the bags onto the floor and then back out the door to my basement storage room to leave the buggy - back up to the apt. Shoes into the bin by the door to be wiped down - gloves disposed of - coat hung up to air - keys into the bowl by the door.

I have bins all set up on the dining table so first the frozen food goes into the dirty bin - gets wiped down with Lysol wipes and transferred to the next bin. The dairy then goes into the dirty bin. Hands washed. Back to the semi clean stuff - they next get wiped down with a hot soapy cloth, dried and put away. Then start on the dairy etc, etc.. It takes ages!

All fresh fruit & veg goes into bowls to be washed, dried and put away - any packaging gets disposed of.

Once everything has been done - takes ages - then I go around wiping down my shoes, keys, handle of my cane, doorknobs and bathroom taps! Then I go into the kitchen and wipe down all those surfaces - bleach the bins that the food was in and finally wipe down the dining table with hot soapy water.
No wonder I go as little as possible - I'm completely frazzled!

  5. I hate shopping as well. I would love to only shop once a month but we love our fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy too much.

    God bless.

  6. Husband stays in the car as he's more vulnerable than me. Shopping right now makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up....not everybody observes the 2m rule and I'm constantly having to back away or dodge around people. I feel stressed up to the eyeballs by the time I get back in the car.

    1. Certainly dodging people in the aisles can be a problem.
