Shopping this morning was pleasant for a change. No queue outside Lidl at 08:15, plus almost empty inside. Within half an hour, we were at Morrison’s, similar there as well. In both shops, I only saw one other person wearing a mask!
By 09:10 we were home and getting everything put away.
We are going to sort out the spare pantry and boxes under the bed pantry in the next few days. If this has taught us anything, it is to be even more prepared! Who knew toilet rolls and elastic would be in such demand, not me.
Once the pantry is topped up, and a list of those items made, I shall begin topping up and increasing my under the bed pantry. Brexit is looming and as it is no longer in the papers, goodness knows what agreements (or not), are taking place.
Prices have certainly risen over these last few weeks. Loose tea has increased by 35p a packet, tinned fruit from 80p to £1 a tin, pilchards for Ruby from £1 to £1:20 etc. My shopping bills have risen so building up spares will happen all through this year.
That Brexit box (or two), kept us going over the first few weeks of lockdown so I am pleased about that.
Yes, I think it's wise to slowly build up stocks of some things. Just carefully and slowly. I have a small stash of food at the Van that I left behind, mostly tins and a few packets. Once I get back there I will assess what I have and perhaps have an extra box of food at the bottom of the wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteDo you give Ruby the pilchards to help her coat? There's a lovely guy at the caravan park with a black Labrador which has the glossiest of coats and when I asked him about it he said he gave her just one tin of pilchards a week and that was the result. He'd been recommended to do it by the vet.
She gets 3 - 6 raw sprats each week plus a tin of pilchards with some of the sauce removed. Her coat used to be lovely and glossy but not so much since she was spayed.
DeleteMichael Gove admitted recently that food will be more expensive if there's a No Deal Brexit, which seems very likely. I've been keeping my Brexit stores stocked up, and intend to increase them, though I'm going to have to make some more space. I read a couple of weeks ago that 30% of our food comes from the EU and that will have tariffs on it, and of the 50% of food that we produce ourselves, we've lost 60% of the people who pick it. We could be in serious trouble where food is concerned.
ReplyDeleteI think people have probably forgotten about the effects of Brexit. We don't know what will happen but I think we are going to not have fun!
DeleteI went through my pantry a few weeks back and moved anything 2022 and later into a back area. That way I will use up items dated 2020 and 2021 first and it also lets me see where the gaps are for restocking purposes. Now when I shop I can rotate things more easily and yes, I am going to keep restocking over the next few months as I fully expect a second lockdown if a really bad second wave hits come this winer.
ReplyDeleteGoods for 2022 have gone back under the bed. I have one or two items close to date but they will last fine. New lists are done but still got to work out a buying list.
DeleteWise move in case there is a second wave.. that's what we are planning too. We were so used to getting our own shopping week by week lock down was a shock and so was shopping on line.
ReplyDeleteI had my Brexit box on the go for two years and always prepare a winter box, just in case.
DeleteYou've taken the words out of my mouth. My stockpiling will be driven by the fact they say Covid19 will return in the winter and basically we will just have to learn to live with it. So I'll be reorganizing cupboards etc get more stuff in.
ReplyDeleteCan only hope they are wrong but guess we will find out. Don’t know whether we have had it or not but might not be so lucky if it spikes or returns.
DeleteI do my shopping early now and much better. I'm also building up a little stock again after running it down before I moved last November.
ReplyDeleteCertainly first thing seems to be better.
DeleteI have a good Winter stock ready and have started adding a little more at a time but stores are limited at the moment as we are on lifeline ferries.
ReplyDeleteHopefully that will change soon, hope you got my message?
