No thanks Boris and Donald

It seems our government has signed or is preparing to sign a US trade deal to import (with tariffs) chlorinated chicken and hormone fed beef, into the UK.

I will not be eating either. I shall be supporting, where possible and finances allowing, our organic UK or EU farmers, who have good farming practices in place. Second to that, especially for Ruby and her food, non-organic farmers who also use good farming practice.

We don't eat much meat anyway and would be perfectly willing to reduce it further.

Once we leave the EU, their meat may well be more expensive due to import tariffs so think the US trade deal is to help with that. Still won't make me buy it.

Support our farmers where possible, they are going to need it, especially if a lot of their produce this year goes to waste with the weather and lack of pickers.

  1. I read about that the other day....disgusting. dare say it will find it's way into our food chain somehow. I went to Mexico for a wedding and was sick more times then I care to remember. The salads and other stuff was washed in a Milton type solution. You get a mouthful that tasted of bleach, horrid. I hope and pray this will encourage British farmers to increase production.

    1. I think buying carefully and cooking from scratch will help.

  2. I agree. I won't be buying it either. I buy UK meat whenever I possibly can. I'm going to reduce our consumption of meat and buy organic. It's a question of finances on a weekly basis but I'll definitely not buy chlorinated chicken and hormone fed beef.

    1. It will probably end up in some form of fast food but who knows.

  3. There are lots of trade deals going through under the radar. We probably won't know what we are eating soon - frightening thought.

    1. Indeed, must keep cooking fresh, frozen or canned decent goods and ignore cheaper fast food products.

  4. Another one who won't be buying it. We should support UK growers and producers as much as possible.

    1. Will certainly have to try harder soon that’s for sure.

  5. An amendment to the bill was put down by opposition MPs to try to keep our current food standards, but it was voted down, and the bill went sailing through, leaving us open to all kinds of stuff being imported. The same thing will happen with worker's rights, if it hasn't already.

    1. I gather it was an electronic vote that was a bit iffy. Guess we will find out eventually what they have been up to.

  6. Part of the deal is apparently that no country of origin or ingredients will be allowed on any foodstuffs not only that from the USA but from this country also.

    1. Where did you hear that? I haven’t seen any reference to that as of yet. Still reckon organic would be labelled.

  7. Ok I am from the US and have never had a problem with our food source. I buy from a local butcher shop and their prices have sky rocketed. Do you worry about E.coli, salmonella, and campylobactor in your chicken? Not sure I would eat meat with that either.

    1. Nothing against US food in general Cheryl, I buy and eat some of it. I understand the reason for it. Our quick grow chicken farms are abhorrent, as are countries farmers that still use caged hens, or pigs that live all their short lives penned into tight crates, none of which I eat. Incidences of the above are not very common over here.

  8. This is one of the reasons we allow very little American beef or chicken into Canada.... No way would I buy that stuff.

    God bless.

  9. Total agreement here. The thought of chlorinated chicken makes me want to throw up. And yes, I agree, deals are being slipped in unnoticed during this time of lockdown

  10. There’s a reason why US chicken is chlorinated - the overbreeding and appalling conditions a lot of chickens are reared in in America, resulting in them arriving at the slaughterhouses in disease-ridden and filthy conditions. The health standards are not as high in US slaughterhouses as those in the U.K., hence the need for chlorine, so the problem is what it’s hiding. As for beef, because of growing demand a lot of cattle are being reared in stock yards, not pasture, and their growth is being accelerated by hormones. Watch a film called Dominion or a programme about cattle rearing in the Us or how pigs are reared in the southern states with slurry being sprayed onto land to get rid of it to the detriment of people living nearby, mostly black and poor. We are not blameless here in the U.K. either. All this to feed growing populations. We cannot continue to “process” animals in this way. We are eating too much, wasting too much and need to see an end to “eat as much as you want”, get a 48oz( and bigger) steak for free if you can eat it all. If you want to see a film about animal rearing in the U.K. watch “Land of hope and glory”. Both films require a strong stomach.

    1. Thanks for that info, I am sure it will highlight the issues involved for those who are not aware of the situation.
