It's fair to say...

That from a clothing point of view, we were caught on the hop when our total lockdown happened. Foodwise, not so. I had a bad feeling from mid January. Already having two Brexit boxes, I slowly built them up further each week. I must admit though, I still got caught out regarding flour, yeast and bicarbonate of soda! Being busy doing that and sourcing things required for mask making, I completely forgot about clothes. Brexit boxes are still getting added to.

From a clothes point of view, we buy only what we need, rarely what we want and make do for a lot of the time. Our clothes go year to year only being replenished when required. We are not fashion conscious, comfort beats looks every time. Buying new underwear happens more often because items nowadays, seem to shrink at an alarming rate with frequent washing!

Not wanting to be caught on the hop again, autumn, winter and spring clothing has been looked at. Replacement items went onto a list. Yesterday and today we went shopping. Two items from Friday were returned for refund today.

New pyjamas for both of us, underwear for both of us (now put away until required). A couple of jumpers and lounge pants for me. I have never had any before but I know they will be comfortable and keep me warm in the months ahead. Coats, hats, gloves, shoes and boots all still fine from a few years ago.

Are you prepared just in case?

  1. I seldom ever buy new clothes except for underwear. I keep watch at thrift stores and buy good quality clothing at very good prices. I have enough clothing to last me probably the rest of my days (I'm 80 years young). Like you, I keep a good supply of food on hand. If we aren't able to buy fresh fruit and vegetables, I have enough to last for a good long time. Having been born in 1940, I grew up learning to be prepared for almost anything.

    1. I just wish it could be instilled in a few more people. I have seen dozens pouring out of Primark, each carrying numerous bags of clothing. I do check out thrift stores, especially for material. Unfortunately over here, some are charging almost full shop prices.

  2. Funnily enough I was only thinking this the other day. Although I have enough underwear I need to go through other things checking what I have. But with me getting ready to move I can combine sorting and packing up and then I should know what, if anything, I need to buy to see me through the coming year.

Planning ahead is a good idea, if charity shops are forced to close down a lot of us recyclers and re-users would be a bit stuck for options.

    1. Can’t beat a bit of planning. For a change I am early doing this.

  3. I've had a bit of a buy up too, underwear, leggings and jumpers. I also bought a dog walking mac reduced from £36 to £15 and although the size 12 is too big it's good for the winter jumpers.

    1. True, having coats big enough to wear over bulky winter clothes is invaluable.

  4. I need a new winter coat. My current one was from M&S 16 years ago, so I've had my moneys worth. It will now be my gardening coat. Nothing wrong with it but I feel like a change.

    1. I have more coats than I used to so hopefully won’t need anymore for a long while. A gardening coat sounds a great idea.

  5. I got my 'best' boots out yesterday and realise they need new heels. I have just spent all my hoarded M&S vouchers&tokens on a new pair of denim jeans- my first new pair for at least 8 years I think. Other than that I think my wardrobe is OK. I have been replenishing my Brexit supplies- when we got Covid19 at the beginning of March [even before lockdown etc] we decided that we could eat the food in the B Box. I've been replenishing it slowly since the summer. My OH inherited a huge bag of coats&jackets from his late brother- so we sorted out his wardrobe [and mine] and were able to pass on a number of thick garments to the Homeless Charity we support in Bournemouth.

  6. At least you found out about the heels before they were needed! Goodness knows what will happen after Brexit, with everything. Where I have room in the freezer, not much now, I aim to top up with some meat.

  7. Just going through our wardrobes changing over some of the items and checking out what needs to be replaced. So far, we have done well with no real expense needed thus far.

  8. I will probably need to pick up some more socks for Harvey and I could use another bra, but other than that we are fine for clothing.

    God bless.
