Tarting up a slice of cake

We are on our final day into our daily slice of the cake I made the other day. We were in the mood for a bit more than that. A can of pineapple slices in juice was opened. Each slice of cake was topped with just one chopped ring each, some juice and a good slurp of evaporated milk:

It really hit the mark. I don't know what it is, but we both find sponge and evaporated milk yummy!

  1. Me too, I love sponge cake with evap, although husband prefers custard. Think it's a childhood thing - we had sponge and evap a lot as kids, whereas husband's family always had custard.

    1. We had tinned fruit and evap every Sunday evening. Only had custard with apple pie or occasionally mashed into a jam roll that was then baked in the oven. Love Birds custard now though as well.

  2. Yes fruit and evap was a Sunday tea time treat. My dad would alternate it each week with the sterilised cream you got in tins then, which I loved. Is it still available?

    1. It was made by Nestle I think, with a blue and white label. Now made by Nestle Carnation, not the same at all. We found it slightly gritty in texture not a bit like the cream used to be. Others like it.
