Carpet Cleaning

In order to have all our carpets cleaned, it would cost us between £100 and £200 per session. Now that we have Ruby, they are getting grubby a little bit quicker. When we have our 4 grand dogs down, grime builds up even more.

After seeing the results of DS and DDiL when their carpets were cleaned, we decided to invest in a Vax carpet cleaner. Just cleaning all the carpets twice will cover the cost of the machine and investing in a 4l bottle of cleaner will last us for 10 - 15 whole house washes.

As you know, Ruby has been unwell a few times on the carpets and hands and knees cleaning just doesn't cope well with those scenarios. The lounge carpet (very old and grubby) was changed when she became house trained otherwise it would really have smelt dreadful by now.

We began yesterday with the kitchen carpet, a large rug from the lounge and a smaller rug from the conservatory. The kitchen carpet hadn't been done for ages and the light today isn't very good to show you the difference but it is so much cleaner. Most people don't have carpet in their kitchen for this reason but we like the warmth it offers in the one room in the house that doesn't have heating:

Here is the water from just the kitchen:
This is the water from the large lounge rug and smaller conservatory one:

Everywhere smells so much better. Despite a thorough hoovering beforehand, the machine still had loads of dog hairs in it when DB cleaned it after finishing. Today we plan to do the lounge and inner hall. Watch this space!

  1. In the past we moved so often that I never had to think about carpet cleaning. Now it's just me and The Dog ( and he is 13+) I have put the deep cleaning idea on the back burner. That machine looks a mighty beast.

    1. Certainly is. Couldn’t stand the whiff any longer!

  2. Whenever I clean my carpets I'm never sure whether to be horrified or relieved at how filthy the water is :)

  3. Looks and sounds like a good investment, and much easier than getting on your hands and knees to scrub if Ruby is unwell.

    1. Takes a bit of cleaning afterwards but everywhere smells clean and not just a nice smell like sprays leave behind.

  4. We purchased a rug shampooer awhile back. Renting them or hiring someone to come in was just getting to be too expensive.

    God bless.

  5. I sometimes borrow my mum's vax. It's the older version, a big orange tub on wheels with handheld parts, etc. I get so excited when I open the drum to see the filthy water! My mum's is at least 20yrs old, so I recommend Vax, always perform well.

    1. Time will tell how well it performs but I remember the orange tubs, they were very good.

  6. With children, dogs and cats I too went through the route of first hiring a carpet washer and then buying my own. In the end I chose a basic tub style Vax which does both dry 'hoovering' for which I have a reusable canvas bag I can wash when needed and then all you do is remove the bag, swap over the head and add the hose and a round piece over the tub. That sounds complicated but it's very simple and the bonus is that when you're washing you only move the pipe and head back and forth instead of pushing the whole weight of water each time. Our sitting room was 40ft long and that really made a difference. It's also handy if you have a small flood say from a washing machine leak as you could use the pointy thing on the end of the pipe to get into corners.

    1. This one comes with a long hose with 3 different heads for stairs, rugs etc. Two of those heads get tight into the corners which is a bony. It is no heavier than our vacuum.

  7. That sounds like a good investment, I guess as dog owners we get used to the smell of our animals in the house so to give everywhere a really good deep clean even just once or twice a year is a good idea. Getting the mucky water out is quite addictive though as I have found out in the past, the one time I got quite pale water after a good clean I was quite disappointed.

Luckily my new place has tiled floors throughout so I should be able to take all the rugs I'm planning to have outside for a good wash every now and then.

    1. Some of our rugs could be put in our machine but it struggled.
