Shrinkflation in action

Amongst many other items of note, I was really shocked yesterday. We were out and about and indulged ourselves by buying Jamacian Ginger Cake, to have at home with a cup of tea. Boy has it shrunk:

It barely measured 3" x 1.75". They used to be twice this big because I remember checking years ago when they were at least 3" x 3".

It is happening to everything, do they think we don't notice? Surely it must be costing the manufacturers an arm and a leg to change their equipment over rather than keep the old sizes and charge more?

It has finally spurred me on to bake our own far more than I usually do. Have you noticed this?

  1. I blame the Government! Always poking their noses in to make us eat less sugar. Do They not realize that we can use a knife for a smaller helping? Said with tongue in cheek.

  2. I noticed it more whilst away and also the substantial rise in prices.

  3. Malt loaves and crumpets have shrunk the same too - I do think we're heading back to what it was like in the 70's and 80's - item weights getting smaller and prices getting larger x

  4. I bought a multipack of Cadbury's fudge last week for the first time since I don't know when. They were so small, compared to the last time I bought them. I won't bother again.

  5. Flakes, Wagon Wheels, cakes - everything like that has definitely shrunk!! Even the contents of packets of crisps have reduced in my opinion.

    1. Even when they haven’t shrunk, there are fewer in a packet.

  6. Here in Canada I mostly notice the rising prices. Scary to think we could be eventually paying more for less.

    God bless.

  7. The classic is Wagon Wheels. How small they are compared to several decades ago!
They think people won't notice that we are getting less for more, but we do!

    1. And the cost of change in manufacturing these smaller items also gets past on.
