More worry for some

The England government is in talks to decide whether pensioners will have to pay for their prescriptions. Under current legislation, once you reach 60, you are entitled to free prescriptions.

They are now proposing that you don't receive them until of pensionable age, exemptions not withstanding. Well, no surprise there then.

I must admit I always felt guilty getting them free of charge when I could afford to pay for them but also realised for many, they were a Godsend. I also thought they are losing a lot of money not charging us. Seems they are looking at doing so!

  1. You can guarantee they'll do it, as J is going to be 60 in March!

    1. Yup! That’s what happened with my pension, moved the goal posts.

  2. I have quite a few prescriptions and before I was entitled to free scripts I used to buy a "season ticket" and was happy to do so. I am now well over pension age anyway but would buy a season ticket again if needed.

    1. Fortunately I never needed enough to warrant one.

  3. My husband now has a pre-payment certificate as we're in our late 50's and were paying around 20/month for his 2 different meds - now it's only around 10 with the pre-payment - I wish I'd known about it years ago though!!

    1. So annoying. Certainly worth it the more meds you need isn’t it?

  4. Trouble is, once they start trimming they don't know when to stop.

  5. While prescriptions in Canada are kind of sort of covered, you have to spend X amount before you get a reduction. We never spend the amount necessary and so are glad that we have some private extra coverage that brings down costs a bit. Not that either of us have that much medication but every little bit helps.

    God bless.

    1. It’s amazing how different each country is regarding prescriptions.

  6. I hadn't heard that but am not surprised. They must be careful, they're already losing the 'pensioner vote' and that won't help.
(or am I just being over-cynical here)

    1. Nope, don’t think you are being over cynical at all.

  7. I was shocked when we moved to Wales and found that everyone gets free prescriptions no matter what their age, it always felt so cheeky after the high charges I was used to in England. I guess it makes sense in some ways but it does feel as though they move the goalposts for those of us in our 60's just as we get close to so many things.
