Sometimes you have to accept defeat

DB has always tackled all DIY jobs both inside and outside the house. We have to say, getting older is no joke. There are things we are finding difficult to do and other things that are becoming difficult/more dangerous to do like getting on the roof!!!

For a few years now, one of the bath taps and the sink mixer tap have started getting jammed. We have hard water and it is often the reason. He has been cleaning them and they last for a while longer. It is getting to the stage that when you turn one of them on, the whole tap moves despite being tightened, repeatedly, below the bath.

Again they have been cleaned but we decided to buy new taps for both the bath and sink and pay someone to fix them in.

The chap who came has done work for us before but he too is getting on in years. He checked what needed doing, whether or not we or he needs anything else - nope!

They will be done on Tuesday.

  1. You do get to the point, I agree. Wisdom is knowing when. Good for you.

    1. It is the first of many such steps no doubt.

  2. Gosh I have had to admit defeat on so many things this year, it's a shocker isn't it. Even Alan admitted to needing help over this latest house move, something that he would never have done five years ago. It's nice sometimes to just get someone in to do things isn't it though, and an older workman sounds like a much better option than some!!

    1. Certainly does. Heaven help us if we need to move, we would have to pay for help rather than do it all ourselves.

  3. The other thing we have accepted is the truth that although you CAN D-I-Y, there are times when a professional can do it much quicker and has specialist tools, and leaves you free to do other stuff. It's taken me ages to get the front path laid - but a local tradesman [and family friend] is going to come and lay the slabs we need around the New Lathe Palace. He's younger, fitter, and able to cope with the heavy lifting, without needing a sit down and a cuppa quite so often

    1. We gave up laying pavement a few years ago. Even revamping the back garden tired us.

  4. This year I put my foot down and insisted that we got someone in to go on the roof to remove the moss from the tiles. My husband was a bit miffed and said he hadn't fallen of the roof before but I pointed out the last time he did it he was 58 now he's almost 70 and it makes a difference. Our builder did it and gave the roof an m.o.t as well so money well spent.

    1. Our gutter above the conservatory is going green and needs cleaning but it won’t be done unless we can find someone.

  6. Getting older is a pain in more ways than one.

    God bless.

  7. Certainly with more years on the clock what would have been a job easily done now has become a (try) and get someone to do it. It has also coincided with living on a much reduced income and rightly good help is neither low cost or available on demand!

    1. Very true. We have been living on DB’s work and government pension so money has been quite tight. Finally though my pension has kicked in (7 years later than anticipated), so luckily we can now afford to get someone in. Price is excellent as well and we know he does good work.

  8. Oh dear! We have one of those sinks as well. For us it's the upstairs bathroom sink. My husband has been fighting that thing since we moved in seven years ago. He tried a pipe cleaner that seemed to help, at least temporarily, but I think he's also about ready to call someone in. It's good to know when a job is too much, for whatever reason, although I agree it's hard to shell out the money!

    1. Sounds like something most of us has happen on occasions. It doesn’t help having a slowly healing trigger thumb but at least we can turn them again. Roll on Tuesday.
