Brr....

We have just had our third very cold night, two at -7.1 and one at -7.8. Two other nights have been -5, gosh. Far colder though in parts of northern Scotland.

The winter bedding is coping fine with the slightly warmer cold nights but on the others, I am feeling cold. Thank goodness for now, this cold snap will be over in a few more days. Our houses are not really built for it! The bedroom was just 10C this morning.

We had a very cold walk this week and were glad to sit in a warm cafe afterwards for jacket potatoes. Thank goodness for the wood burner!

More soup will be made, it really does warm you up and if you can’t afford much else, try and make some with any bits and bobs you have. We sometimes have it as a main meal, over rice, pasta or mashed potatoes.

  1. I usually take sandwiches to Mum's when we visit each week, it's tasty for us and she enjoys having her lunch decision already made for her one day a week. But this week I decided to some pots of soup and bread rolls, I think we all appreciated the change and the warmth it provided.

    1. Sometimes on our weekly friends walk, we take a thermos of soup if it isn’t too cold to sit out.

  2. Very cold in our corner of Norfolk last night. I woke at 2am needing the loo. It was so clear outside, the sky was full of stars. But I was too much of a wimp to go outside and watch the Geminids Meteor shower! Maybe next year

    1. I tried once and gave up, too cold and too intermittent.

  3. It's very cold here in the Midlands, but very sunny. Our dual fuel bill was £450 this month!! I could understand it if our house was toasty, but quite the opposite. We've really cut back but it's getting us nowhere. We dilly-dallied re.getting a woodburner fitted last summer, with an installation date in October, but we decided not to at that point. However, if we now want one, the installation date is June 2023!!

  4. I went outside last night to throw the furnace filter away in garbage disposal bin. I could see my breath. Clear sky as I could see stars 🌟 32 degrees. Frosty grass this morning on our lawn. We have heat on at home and it's 2 degrees lower when we go to bed. Stay warm. I'm going to make a double batch of cookies today. Some will be given away.

  5. Pretty chilly here, -24C with wind chill it's -37C. Fortunately our houses are built for this kind of weather, we'd be in a right predicament if they weren't!!! We're supposed to have these temps until the weekend and then we might get above zero.

    1. Our coldest night so far over here, up in Scotland, was about -19C. If it’s that cold and you can’t afford the heating, it’s deadly. The government just don’t care. In rural areas, a lot of people have oil boilers, no help towards that.
