Frozen ground

The two spells of freezing weather have frozen my raised beds! That’s a first. I went to fill a trench with veg peelings, easy enough. Trying to cover them with soil was extremely difficult. Just about managed but digging a new trench proved impossible. I shall try again in a few days.

Stocking up a few extra tins for the pantry this week, I noticed tinned potatoes had risen from 36p a few months ago, to 69p, ouch. Apparently this is going to be happening for most of this year. Is it always necessary or are the supermarkets making even more profit? I bet the farmers and producers are seeing very little extra cash from them.

  1. I doubt that the farmers are seeing much extra cash, but it seems that it's mostly the price of manufacturing the cans that has skyrocketed now, which I guess is to be expected with the energy price hikes. So I think that now is the time to gather in supplies of tinned foods before it gets any worse.

Yes I went out to try and get some compost from the raised bed again yesterday and it is still actually frozen, I might try again this afternoon as the sun is shining at the moment.

  2. We've still got leeks and carrots in our veg beds but haven't even looked to check whether they're still edible or rotting in the ground, it's been so frozen solid out there.

    1. 2 small rows of carrot and just 2 leeks which I think may be for the compost bin:(

  3. A blogger I follow here in Canada that lives not too far away, told me a friend of hers that works in a grocery said to expect even more rising prices in the month of February. Getting even more scary.

    God bless.
