Baking and making

The temperature may only be around 2 degrees Celsius at the moment but the sun is shining and the sky is blue with streaks of white cloud.

A full line of washing is out blowing in a slight breeze with the sun fully on them. You can tell now that the season is beginning to change as only a few weeks ago, the sun wouldn't have been on the line at all!

Yesterday afternoon, I was busy in the kitchen, keeping warm. First on the go was a half batch of granola for DB.

Having made chicken and vegetable 'pies' the other day with scones on the top, I decided to make something similar but with ham. Divided between these dishes is one pint of savour leek sauce plus half an onion, a whole red pepper and about 4oz home cooked diced ham.

Mashed potatoes went on top this time and we both agreed, it was a better topping. We had half a dish each for tea followed by fresh fruit salad and the remains of some cream. It could have done with a little more browning but was already beginning to boil over.

The other dish was put into the freezer for another day.

  1. Its quite cold her today but dry and sunny. I had a little walk round the garden earlier and the bulbs are popping up, giving hope that spring is on its way, then the weather forecast has said snow for the weekend sometime.. drat!

Your granola looks nice, I have never made any myself we usually just stick to porridge or Lidl muesli. The creamy ham and veg bakes look delicious, just my kind of comfort food, inexpensive and full of flavour. Think I will put those on my menu for next week :-) Thank you for the idea.

  2. I've never made granola, but Mr KB does eat quite a bit of this kind of cereal. I'm seriously tempted to give it a go. :)

    1. 27 July 2012 is the day I posted first about this with the recipe. It is not as cheap as that you can but is far nicer. We have porridge Monday to Friday, Granola Saturday and Toast Sunday so it usually lasts us a month.

  3. Homemade granola is by far the best, but all too easy to eat by the handful straight from the jar! ( or is that just me (: xxx

    1. Yes it is but we force ourselves to be restrained - quite difficult!

  4. Although cold, it definitely feels like spring is just around the corner. I'm pleased to see that there is still a bit of daylight left when I come out of work. I really dislike going to work and coming home in the dark.

  5. I used to hate that too especially as a job I had many years ago, had to walk home in the dark some 3 miles or so - not nice at all.
