Nope, not talking about spiders although we have had our fair share of those this Autumn. We went to our local shop to get milk and inside, sitting on a shelf, marked at just £1, was the biggest butternut squash we have seen. Puts the ones in the big shops to shame.
It was roasted in the oven and what wasn't used up for a meal, got frozen for later use in a curry or with pasta, oh, and it weighed 5lbs after roasting.
We had lots like this weighing 2Kg or more and sold them for £1.50. I always wonder how the supermarkets get so many the same size because with just a couple of dozen plants they range from teeny to huge, so I wonder if all the giant ones get rejected and chucked. What's the betting on that one?
ReplyDeleteI think that is probably correct seeing as we all know about uniformed sizes in fruit and veg, shame really, to waste food like that.
DeleteThat was a good buy, I like them in a risotto.
ReplyDeleteIt is still quite firm even after roasting. Some will be used in soups, the rest with pasta and rice. I think the cubes would be fine to cut even smaller once thawed.
DeleteOur butternuts this year are all shapes and sizes , we had the first one last night roasted with sausage casserole it was lovely
ReplyDeleteThe house still smells of butternut squash this morning, nice and spicy.
DeleteIt`s lovely when you find a nice specimen of butternut squash. Yours looks fabulous, and I bet it was tasty, too. Pumpkins are in the shops now and I found a very large one for just £1 the other day. I`m stocking up on them as they store well over the winter and are a nice addition to stews and curries.
ReplyDeleteVery tasty and its flesh seems more solid than others we have tried.
DeleteI think you got a bargain there! I love it roasted or in a nice spicy soup. I bought a bag of sweet potatoes from aldi this week for 69p so we will have those as wedges roasted with some sausages.
ReplyDeleteJust making a curried squash soup at the moment.
DeleteThat is some squash - you are right that you don't see specimens of that size too often! I think you got a bargain there xxx
ReplyDeleteMakes you wonder just how many of this sort of vegetable get thrown away due to their size.
DeleteDefinitely a bargain DC. I like it in risotto but hate peeling it. P x
ReplyDeleteDB did it this time as it was peeling one a few months ago that I took a chunk out of my finger!
DeleteReadily available to buy here in South Africa and even better, very reasonablably priced ready peeled which is something I,ve recently moved on to.My hands say thank you lol
ReplyDeleteI know, when fresh they seem to peel more easily than when a few days old.
DeleteWe had spicey roast butternut today with lentil dhal - bit of a change from the usual Sunday roast! What a whopper this is though! You dud well there. I think more and more of us are shopping 'down' these days, seems to be a cheaper and pleasanter experience all round. Lx
