Our mini pear tree, a Comice, had the biggest pears it has ever had, each one weighing in at just under 380g - huge. Here is DB holding one of them:
I left them on the tree as long as possible but now we are having cold nights, didn't want to risk losing them to frost. This little tree gave us 11 of these, fantastic!
Unfortunately it is now getting attacked by some sort of bug inside the leaves. Hardly surprising as it lives in gravel and doesn't receive much attention. However, I shall rake the gravel back and give it some soil improver this autumn, see if that helps it.
Although it was supposed to be a very good year for apples, ours were rubbish, we got just one to eat! The red pears and this one did well, as did the plums. I have ordered and await delivery of a nice crab apple tree later in the year. It will go in my new back border.
WOW ... now THAT is what you call a pear!!
ReplyDeleteI might have to treat myself to a little apple tree in a pot for my new place. I can't imagine not having something growing outside my door.
It would be nice. There are some lovely column trees nowadays.
DeleteThat is a huge pear, it looks a really good specimen. I hope it tastes as good as it looks.
ReplyDeleteTakes about 7-10 days indoors to be ready. They are delicious!
DeleteAs they say in newspapers "What A Whopper!"
ReplyDeleteI'm now eating the pears that tend to go brown in the middle as they get ripe. I cut bits off the outside to eat until I get to the brown bit - it's very annoying - feels such a waste
At least you get to eat some of it but the middle going first is annoying.
DeleteThat's huge! I don't like pears....well, I don't mind the taste, it's the gritty texture I really don't like. Husband loves them.
ReplyDeleteSome varieties are gritty but these are lovely and crisp when ready.
DeleteWe had a few comice this year but its that bit indoors I can never judge. We waste some trying them out too soon.
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere that a gentle press near the stalk helps. If it just gives its nearly there so another day or two.
DeleteWow, that is impressive.
ReplyDeleteIt and they certainly are.
