There were lots of gardens to look at, some of which were quite weedy but I know a lot of people who like me, garden organically. They don't mind the weeds but I do and try to compensate for the lack of them with a diverse supply of flowers etc for the wildlife!
Herewith some of them. In the compost area DB is looking at the results of decorating your compost bin:

Geoff Hamilton's Paradise Garden:
A lovely flower, I thought it was a variation on the Corncockle, it has similar leaves and habit. It turned out to be the flower of salsify. I have grown Scorzonera to eat and left it to flower where it produces a similar but yellow flower.
I also bought 4 packets of seeds which I left behind:( Anyhow, several emails later, they had found them and agreed to post them to me so that was nice.
Never been there, wish we had done when we lived in the Midlands as it looks so interesting. I would have loved to have seen Geoff Hamilton's garden.
ReplyDeleteGeoff hamilton's garden at Barnsdale, Exton, Oakham in Rutland is the place to see a lot of what he created, open to the public although a little expensive, there are lots of ideas to be had.
ReplyDeleteThe tv programme All Muck and Magic was what got us into gardening : )
ReplyDeleteThat along with Geoff Hamilton are the programmes that set us off down the organic trail.
DeleteI love the line up of compost bins :-)
ReplyDeleteSomething satisfying about them isn't there?
DeleteI loved Geoff Hamilton's "The ornamental kitchen garden" - I adopted his techniques of growing veg and flowers together. I also made his half barrel wildlife pond many years ago. An inspirational gardener!
ReplyDeleteI cried on and off for ages when he died, still miss him.
DeleteWe went to Ryton last month. As I said in my blog on it my favourite garden was the Muck and Magic one. I don't remember the programme (makes me feel young!) but it is about the same size as ours and something I would like to do one day. I remember Geoff Hamilton being a presenter on Gardener's World but I was a student living in halls when he died so gardening programmes weren't of interest to me then. I didn't realise until we visited Ryton what a big influence in organic gardening he was.
ReplyDeleteHe was Gardener's World first Organic Gardener to my knowledge, such an influence even now.
DeleteWhat an amazing place! Haven't seen All Muck and Magic but what a great title!
ReplyDeleteIt was a good tv programme if typical of its time.
