Shopping changes

It was slightly busier this morning, extra workers? Lidl was allowing more people into the shop than the last few weeks and I felt uncomfortable. I couldn’t stay away from anyone due to the numbers but I did have mask and gloves on so can only hope for the best. They also didn’t have several normal food items I needed.

As Morrison’s hasn’t had Yorkshire tea leaves in for weeks, we decided to finish our shopping by driving further to Sainsbury’s. The queue was quite long, again something new, we drove straight out. Driving a bit further, we arrived at Tesco, no queue and not too busy inside. I don’t like this particular shop and got around and out ASAP.

Has anyone else noticed a price increase in food. My total was £48, more than normal for a similar amount of food.

We were glad to get home, put it away, wash hands and door handles, then settle for a drink of tea.

  1. I've noticed a price increase too! The roads are definitely busier and this week I had to queue for Morrisons. I think Thursdays are busier in Lidl as it's the day the "middle of Lidl" offers start - I've found I have to queue on Thursdays.

    1. Ah, that might explain it thanks. Won’t go on a Thursday again.

  2. Yes, my grocery shop has definitely gone up in price. Every time I notice price increases on some things, eg coffee I normally buy was up 30p yesterday.

    1. Suppose things will carry on rising, more so when we finally finish in the EU. Hope trade agreements being discussed now work well.

  3. The chap did our shopping earlier and visited a different supermarket because we needed a few things our regular place doesn't sell. He did not enjoy it one bit! Back to normal next time.

Having looked at the receipt, yes there are a few items that have shot up since the last time we bought them, thankfully we can absorb the increases as we're not spending on anything else.

    1. Same here just a bit annoyed and hope it’s for a proper reason rather than the shops cottoning on.

  4. My shopping has been rising for awhile, there are certainly price increases. Glad you managed to get everything needed but what a hassle having to go to so many shops. Take care.

  6. I'm just in from my week's grocery shop - went during the senior hour - 7am to 8am. No lineup and didn't get busier until I was ready to leave - there is someone at the door limiting entry. The parent company has also given Health Care workers priority entry - which I have absolutely no objection to outside of the senior hour (it's only twice a week at this chain). The idea of senior hour was to protect the most vulnerable - so if you now allow health-care workers during those same 2 hours (out of the whole week) then you are mixing the most vulnerable in with those who are most exposed.

Only had to point out to one man that he was going he wrong way - he apologized and backed up - and then had to ask the young fellow (who I assume was a health care worker) to wait until I had cleared my items - he was a bit too quick to come up to the till. Luckily there was damage to a couple of items he'd bought so he went back to get another one which gave me a chance to get away.

Yes, some items are higher in price - other things seem to be much the same - but there aren't as many sale items or deals. Still no bread flour - but a few bags of All Purpose. The price of poultry was actually lower than normal - pork seems too be as usual - not a lot of beef. Paper products were fine - some bleach - no wipes or Lysol spray.
I wear a mask and gloves - I used to enjoy food shopping - now it's just stressful!

    1. DB hasn’t set foot in a shop since middle of March, lucky him. We don’t have a huge selection of meat as normal but I don’t mind that.

    2. I'm a senior AND a healthcare worker. When am I meant to shop?

  7. Yes, I've noticed a lot of prices have gone up. And a lot of offers have stopped too.

  8. I braved Aldi this morning for the first time in weeks. I just can't get my head around the people who are walking around as if these are normal times. I swear I'm going to have to pin signs to be saying ' Back off'.
I think the price rises may be due to retailers trying to recoup the money that they've spent on employing extra staff for delivery services and to replace those who are having to shield.
It will only get worse after December. I've been very glad of my Brexit cupboards, as I still have bread, SR and plain flour in stock, along with numerous other things that were bought when prices were much lower.

    1. I was almost the only one in mask and gloves, I hate shopping now. Our Brexit boxes are almost intact with a few exceptions which I shall remedy when possible. I was annoyed to buy some flour a couple of weeks ago, only to find yesterday it is out of date this month:(

    2. Only me in a mask , and only a few in gloves. I just don't understand it.
Have you got space for the flour in your freezer? You could split it into smaller quantities so that you can take it out as necessary. I'm sure they store it in the freezer in hotter countries to prevent bugs... I may have read it on Down to Earth.

    3. Yes I do, thanks. Brain not working properly I’m sure, can’t fit a whole bag in - doh!

    4. The date on Flour is only there because it has to be. I put all my Flours in the freezer for a week or leave them in there if I have the room, until I need them. If I need the space, I then double wrap them in gling film or Plastic bags and put them in the pantry until needed.Have used flour 2 years out of date this way. Hope this helps.

  9. Tesco announced they were stopping multi offers to help discourage stockpiling of items. I guess other retailers have done similar.

I'm finding price rises have risen quite a lot - and I have 2 extra adult mouths at home 24/7 (uni students) to add to that. Still - we are all safe and well, and can absorb the increased food spends, so I can't moan too much...

    1. The advantage of being at home, if money is still coming in is food rises can be absorbed.

  10. In the US they are limiting meats and certain items still. In my state of Pennsylvania you must wear a mask before you are allowed in any shop or they will refuse you entering. Was out today to pick-up a Wal-Mart order. You go online, pick the items you want, and pay online. They tell you when the order is ready and you drive to a certain section of the parking lot. Somebody comes out and put your bags in the trunk of your car. The regular parking lot was full, no way would I do that.

  11. Things are definitely more expensive although they started going up before Christmas (maybe a response to Brexit?). I can't see it getting anything but more expensive over the next months either.

  12. The wearing of a mask only protects those that the mask wearer breathes on, so to be effective everyone needs to wear them. In addition they get hot and uncomfortable which means people fiddle with them thus transferring germs and virus onto hands whether that is gloves or bare hands.
I wonder if the increased footfall could be down to the fact that over 70' s are no longer expected to "shield". My husband 82 and I (78) are in this group and I personally am going to stay home and rely on my family or shop deliveries.

    1. Husband has to keep away but not me so the shopping falls to me. He stays in the car, dons gloves to help me pack. He then removes and disposes of his gloves. Whilst I have mine on, I carefully remove my mask, then clean my gloved hands, remove those then clean my hands before entering the car. Once home, after shopping is put away, all handles are cleaned, I don my gloves again, place my mask in boiling hot soapy water to steep, then wash my gloved handss thoroughly with soap and water, dry, then leave them in the sun. I used to be a nurse and often did barrier nursing so this is the best I can do, with what we have, to protect us.

  13. I've shopped for my husband, myself and my mum during the NHS hour since lockdown began and I've definitely noticed an increase in prices.
