I think some of the baby deaths have occured with people either not tying them on properly (including adding extra tabs to keep them straight and tight) or leaving the ties so long the baby got caught up in them, either way, a tragedy. There are ways to use them and be as safe as possible.
Anyway, I offered to make one (with copious short loops for tying on) and DDiL said okay. If they have now changed their minds, I really don't mind.
Anyway, here is a shot of some of it. I made it reversible so they can chose which side to have facing in, if they use it.
I too had cot bumpers for my children. I think they're going to love the one you've made, its beautiful.

ReplyDeleteIt's the same with sleeping positions, on the back on the side on their fronts. I just went with how my boys slept best ... my eldest would only sleep on his back, much to the horror of the health visitor, the youngest would only sleep on his side. I didn't use cot bumpers with either because I could afford them, but I have always thought that they must make for a cosy environment when baby is tiny. Keeping any draughts away, and with a nice pattern giving them something to look at. I suppose sewn on Velcro would be safe than ties but either is fine until the baby is old enough to tamper with things and then usually they are not needed anyway.

DS slept on his side with a rolled towel behind him to stop him going onto his back as they were not to sleep on their backs. Now they are! I was going to do Velcro ties but at the time of sewing, didn’t know if the bars were round or flat.
DeleteThat's lovely. I'm not sure if my son and DIL have one yet as baby is still in her moses basket in their room with them. I bought a cat-net for them ages ago - and they thought it was really funny - yet in my day they were used a lot! Funny how things change - yet babies don't.

Delete3 children, 3 different sleeping recommendations, all from unmarried non mother health visitors. we just smiled and got on with what ever worked. Had for bumpers in plastic which was probably the worst thing. More recent grandchild had individual ones that velcro'd round separate bars which we thought was good because they could go wherever child naturally went. They were a good cotton material which was probably better than 1970s plastic?
